This paper looks like a paper mill generated paper based on the following evidences:

It is writen in a "style" very similar to another paper from a completely different group: "LncRNA LIFR-AS1 promotes proliferation and invasion of gastric cancer cell via miR-29a-3p/COL1A2 axis": https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33407453/

And like that paper includes the following sentence about the cell lines it makes use of:

"Human GC cell lines of HS746T, BSG823, MKN28, 9811, BGC803, MGC803 and BGC823, and normal gastric cell line of GSE1 were obtained from Cell Bank of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Shanghai, China). "

The problem with this sentence is that: 1) BSG823 does not exist, it is a misspelling of "BGC823" (also mentioned) and 2) "BGC803" also does not exist, it is a misspelling of "MGC-803" which is also listed. So the above sentence while seemingly listing 7 GC cell lines in fact only describes 5 different cell lines.

In any case both BGC-823 and MGC-803 are contaminated cell lines, so that paper only makes use of three real GC cell lines: Hs746T, MKN28 and XGC9811 (that they call 9811).

Western-Blot-like images with this curiously stylised appearance, where every band resembles a string of sausages, are often encountered in products of certain papermills.

The flow-cytometry apoptosis assays are also from a suite favoured by the "direct target" papermill.

Retracted 8 August 2024

"The above article, published online on 8 March 2021 in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com), has been retracted by agreement between the journal Editor-in-Chief, Jiang Fan; and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The retraction has been agreed due to concerns raised by third parties on the data presented in the article. Several flaws and inconsistencies between results presented and experimental methods described were found. Specifically, multiple image elements were found to have been published elsewhere in a different scientific context. Furthermore, the article presents results from multiple non-verifiable/unknown cell lines: BSG823, BSG803, BGC803, and GSE1. Accordingly, the conclusions of this article are considered invalid by the editors. The authors have been informed of the decision of retraction but unavailable for a final confirmation."
