China's Mystery Language
Nüshu 女书
We recently visited Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, with students to learn about 女书 (Nüshu), which means ‘women’s writing’ in Chinese.![]()
The Nüshu script, a unique phonetic alphabet used for the local dialect, is significant in linguistic and cultural studies.It was entirely understandable when spoken aloud, but it was unintelligible to men when written down.Pinky Qian, one of our project leaders, played a key role in designing the project-based learning aspect of the program, as explained in the video below.In Huangshan, we offer a unique blend of culture and nature. The area is abundant with ancient villages containing old buildings.
We take students to these villages to help restore the historic Hui buildings to their former glory.
Through these efforts, we aim to preserve and promote culture and traditions dating back to the Qing and Ming Dynasties.
Shanghai Service LearningAs we all know, Shanghai is known for its glitz and glamour.
However, finding genuine service learning opportunities can be quite difficult.
Fortunately, one of our team members, Lina, volunteers at a charity that assists visually impaired individuals.
When two schools visiting Shanghai for a trip asked us to incorporate service learning into their itinerary, Lina contacted the NGO she volunteers with to arrange for students to meet and spend a day with a group of visually impaired individuals. Our Project Leader, Ricardo, shared his thoughts on the experience in the video below.
