Wuhan Race Reflection: Triumph, Lessons, and Water Safety Awareness
After an exciting yet exhausting race last Sunday in Wuhan, I am finally sitting down to reflect on the experience. Originally, this write-up should have preceded my “Facing the Typhoon” article [直面台风:应对水灾害的策略、往年灾难教训及必备安全提示] about Typhoon Bebinca's imminent arrival, but I thought I should prioritize sharing tips on how to stay safe during a typhoon. Nevertheless, as they say, better late than never, here is my long-awaited recap of the 2024 Asia Triathlon Cup and Wuhan National Triathlon U Series Championship.

My sister and I proudly represented Shanghai in the youth triathlon. We could have trained harder but schoolwork was too overwhelming—but we pledged to be more prepared next time. Despite the intensity of the competition, Wuhan greeted us with clear blue skies. However, true to its reputation as the “oven city,” the humidity and heat made it especially challenging for the athletes. The day kicked off with the elite athletes from the Asia Triathlon Cup, followed by the U Series athletes like us.

One of the most inspiring parts of the day was the opportunity to meet top-tier athletes from around the world, exchange insights, and discuss something deeply important to me—water safety. It surprised many, but as I explained, even strong athletes sometimes face water hazards. Water safety awareness is not just for beginners or non-swimmers; it is a universal issue. In fact, as strong swimmers, we are in a unique position to lead by example.

A highlight of my day was a conversation with Australian athlete Toby Powers, who won the men’s race. He remarked that my water safety awareness project was “timely and relevant” for athletes competing in such intense conditions. It was a reminder that no matter how well-prepared we are physically, safety must always be a priority. Lin Xin Yu from Sichuan took home the women’s title, but I was fortunate enough to chat with Yang Yi Fan, the first runner-up from Shandong, at the hotel lobby. Her words of encouragement for me to aim for the elite level in the future were truly heartwarming. She is a kind and supportive role model.

What stood out most to me was the energy of the day—every athlete was motivated, and the competition was fierce. But I had an additional goal: promoting water safety awareness. Supported by my sister and fellow Shanghai athletes, we spread the message to as many people as possible. This international platform was the perfect opportunity, and I hoped our campaign would resonate with athletes, who could then carry the message back to their communities.

The race organizers deserve special recognition. They made water safety a top priority, ensuring safety boats, technical officials, and volunteers were constantly monitoring the open water swim. As someone who advocates for water safety, it was reassuring to see such diligence. Kudos to the team for their efforts.

Once the elite race concluded, it was our turn in the 2024 National Triathlon U Series Championship. Shanghai was well-prepared, and we made sure to warm up adequately to avoid injuries and give our best performance. Many of my teammates achieved personal bests, but by the end, I was completely exhausted, feeling my energy completely drained. Despite not reaching my peak, I am grateful for the opportunity to challenge myself, meet incredible athletes, and grow both mentally and physically.

The trip from Shanghai to Wuhan was long and tiring, but it was worth every moment. My sister and I are proud to have represented the city we love, and equally important, to have taken another step in spreading the word about water safety awareness. This campaign means a lot to us, and I invite all of you to join us in ensuring that everyone stays safe in and around water.

Let us continue to grow this initiative together. After all, water safety is everyone’s responsibility.

"Water safety is essential for everyone, especially for young people. It is crucial to learn the necessary knowledge and skills. I urge everyone to participate in water safety programs, as they not only help prevent drowning but also enable us to assist others in emergencies, reflecting our sense of responsibility. Let’s work together to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all."
-- Shanghai Triathlon Team, Coach Peng

"Water hazards can come from many sources, such as typhoons, pollution, and floods. I believe it is crucial to focus on the safety of children, especially when they engage in water sports. Tragically, many children have lost their lives during activities like swimming or boating. Preventive measures are key to saving lives. Before participating in any water sport, thorough preparation is essential to minimize potential risks and prevent water-related accidents."
