6th Media Materiality Forum
Digital Intelligence, Cosmotechnics, and Planetary Future
From telescopes, rockets, and satellites to spacecraft, human beings are no longer just looking up at the heave and sign the "vastness of the heaven and the infinity of the universe."1 Instead, we have broken through the limitations of the body, and through a variety of media and technologies, they have reshaped the relationship between the cosmos, the Earth, and the human being. Although today the Earth remains the focus on the human condition, the horizons of humankind are no longer limited by the land beneath our feet.
1. The Preface to the Pavilion of Prince Teng (滕王阁序) by Wang Bo (王勃), one of the most famous pieces of classical Chinese literature, originally written during the Tang dynasty. The text is known for its vivid description, historical reflection, and philosophical insights.
In recent years, researches on media materialities have provided numerous new perspectives for understanding the relationship between humans and objects. How to understand the Earth-human/post-human relationship? How to recognize artificial intelligence, human intelligence and non-human intelligence in the pervasive parcel of digital technologies? How can humans be held accountable for their actions in the Anthropocene, and what kind of post-humanist ethics should be developed? What kind of future lies in human imagination and discernment, when we are inhabiting the earth and looking up to the stars? How are the relationships between human beings, non-human organisms, technologies, inorganic matter and other multiple actors woven and entwined? What is the future of media studies around these questions?
In light of these philosophical inquiries, the 6th Media Materialities Forum will be held at the School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University, on March 29-30th, 2025. Topics for this year's forum include and are not limited to:
1. Planetary Perception: The Infrastructure of Opticsand Electricity
2. Nature, Weather, and Elemental Media
3. Animal Studies and Cross-Species Media
4. Wetware and Bio-media
5. Apparatus of biopolitics and Existential media
6. Embodied Intelligence and Embodied Media
7. Media I/O: Sensory and Sensors
8. Digital Humanities and Critical Artificial Intelligence Studies
9. Interfaces, Stacks, and Networks of Media
10. Geographic Media and Locative Media
11. Weaving and Programming
12. Media Ontology
13. Media, Time, and Labor
14. Ludology and Deludology
15. Object-Oriented Fandom Studies
16. Rethinking Media Materialities
……
In this era when human beings are constantly exploring beyond themselves, we see the potential of Eastern thought. Here, we invite you from various disciplinary fields and professional backgrounds to explore the future of planets and disciplines together at the blurred boundaries, and to think together about the development and diversity of human beings. Let's meet at Tsinghua University in the spring of 2025, and talk about technological boundaries, cosmic stars and infinite possibilities in the land where the ancient and the modern are intertwined.
