周光召在国际顾问委员会上的讲话

编者按：2005年9月，理论物理所成立首个国际顾问委员会。该委员会在规划理论物理的研究方向、推进国内外理论物理学界的合作交流起到了重要作用。周光召作为顾问委员会成员，每次2-3天的会议，从早8点到晚6点，他都亲自听取汇报、参加讨论。本文为2011年6月4日周光召先生在国际顾问委员会上的讲话。

Prof. Guang-Zhao Zhou’s Speech

(International Advisory Committee Meeting on June 4, 2011)

Good morning,

I was not told by Professor Wu (Wu Yue-Liang, former Director of ITP-CAS) to give a speech here, I didn’t prepare. But as soon as I see David (Prof. David Gross, the 2004 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics, Chairman of the International Advisory Committee of ITP-CAS), I remember many things in last thirty years. I remember that I met David in 1982 in Princeton. During the time just after the "Cultural Revolution", we know that the Chinese scientists suffered very much at that time.

I felt that at that time all the physicists, especially in basic research science, gave us all the help they can, because we all belong to an international family. Every time I have some problems concerning international exchanges and collaborations, I turn to them, and then the problems get solved. For example, at that time the Chinese scientists were not remembered by the IUPAP (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics), and it was very difficult to get the Chinese scientists from both mainland and Taiwan to join, because there was one restriction that one nation should have only one society. So I turned to Bob (Prof. R. Marshak，former President of the American Physical Society), he was the president of the US physical society, and he has many friends everywhere in world. So, it was after one year, that he made a lot of efforts to change this in the IUPAP, as there was a rule have to be changed so that not only one society can join. So, we joined the IUPAP in 1984, it's that what I remember.

And in the late times, after we came back to this international family, with a lot of help from scientists in the world. So, I would like to tell at this time all these young scientists here in China that we should not forget all the help which the scientists in the world gave us in the last thirty years. Without their help, we could not get such great progress in present time. And another important thing in the last thirty years was that a large number of Chinese scientists were trained in the United States, in Europe, in Japan, I think most of young scientists here get the basic training there. So, I think the international spirit should be one of the most important spirits here in this institute. And I think, in the future, we should remember all of this, not only learn from them, and also cooperate with them, and to make all the things we can do to make progress in the whole science in world.

This is just what I get in my mind and thank you very much.

中国科学院理论物理研究所国际顾问委员会会议

早上好！

吴教授（吴岳良，中国科学院理论物理研究所原所长）没有提前通知我在这里发言，所以我没有准备。但看到David（大卫.格罗斯教授，2004年诺贝尔物理学奖获得者，国际顾问委员会主席），我想起了过去三十年的许多往事。1982年，我在普林斯顿第一次见到了David。那时刚刚经历了“文化大革命”，我们都知道中国的科学家在那段时间受到了极大的影响。

我感受到那时所有的物理学家，特别是基础科学领域的物理学家，都尽其所能帮助我们，因为我们都属于一个国际大家庭。每当我在国际交流与合作中遇到问题时，我都会请他们提供帮助，问题总能得到解决。例如，当时中国科学家没有被国际纯粹与应用物理联合会（IUPAP）认可，要让中国大陆和台湾的科学家同时加入非常困难，因为当时的规定是一个国家只允许有一个学会加入。为此，我去找了Bob（著名理论粒子物理学家、美国物理学会前主席马夏克），他是美国物理学会的会长，且在世界各地有许多他的朋友。经过他一年的努力，IUPAP改变了这个规则，不再是一个国家只允许一个学会可以加入。于是我国物理学会在1984年成功加入了IUPAP，这是我记忆犹新的事情。

后来，当我们加入到这个国际大家庭，得到了世界各地科学家的大力支持。所以我想在这个时候告诉在座的年轻科学家们，我们不能忘记过去三十年里世界各地科学家给予我们的帮助。没有他们的支持，我们不可能取得像今天这样大的成就。另一个重要的事情是，在这三十年里，许多中国科学家在美国、欧洲和日本接受了培训。我相信这里的大多数年轻科学家都是在那里接受过或多或少的基础训练。因此，我认为，国际合作精神应该是我们理论物理研究所最重要的精神之一。我认为，将来我们不仅要记住这些帮助，还要继续向他们学习，与他们合作，共同推动全球科学的发展。

这就是我的一些感想，谢谢大家。
