PhD Position - Rethinking Frequency Control in Power Systems
1 Job description
The existing power system operation architecture has organically grown over nearly a century, as new needs emerged, as technology and methods have advanced, and its recent development is also guided by the liberalisation of energy markets.
In particular, energy balancing and frequency control nowadays rely on the classical three-level architecture of – sorted from seconds to hours – primary frequency control for stabilisation, secondary frequency control to regulate the frequency and area balancing error to a nominal value, and tertiary control to reschedule the grid operating point.
As a result of increased distributed, renewable, and inverter-based generation this classical architecture reaches its limits due to faster and more fragile (low-inertia) dynamics, more uncertainty and disturbances, and the sheer scale of distributed generation.
Hence, in this PhD project, the intention is to rethink the frequency control architecture for inverter-dominated power systems and evaluate in a structured way how much of which and where reserves are needed to keep the system stable when employing the proposed frequency control.
2 Requirements
The successful candidate fulfills the following requirements:
an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields
background in electric power systems and/or controls
written and spoken fluency in English
capability to work in an interdisciplinary manner
creative and independent thinking
Prior experience in research in the form of student projects is a plus.

3 Tasks
During your PhD studies, you are expected to dive into the modeling of the dynamics of low-inertia power systems and develop methods for the control of such systems at the fast time scales. You will carry out theoretical derivations and analyses but also implement simulations to test the developed methods.
As part of your PhD studies, you will publish your work and present at scientific conferences. You will also assist in the supervision of semester and MSc theses and provide teaching assistance in courses taught by the advisors.
As the position is part of the NCCR Automation, you will participate in center activities such as retreats or the bi-annual conference and interact with other researchers in the center.

If you want to establish your career as an early-stage researcher and are currently looking for the best possible foundation for your dreams and ambitions, then look no further.
We offer a PhD position with the possibility of establishing your career as a scientist in photonic integrated circuits based optical computing. You will be working at DTU Electro, in the Photonic Integrated Circuit based Systems (PICSys) group. The setting will be the cutting-edge laboratory for advanced optical and digital signal processing and integrated photonics devices, and the access to one of the largest cleanroom facilities in European Universities. You will be working with a group of professionals in optical computing, optical phased arrays, integrated photonics devices, and optical and digital signal processing. You work on a large EU project, collaborating with other five institutions in Europe. You will break new ground at the optical neural networks (ONNs) by harnessing the power of a radically new digitized optical computing architecture.
2 Requirements
Your required qualifications and skills are:
Excellent English communication skills both spoken and written.
A master level education in the fields of integrated photonics, optical computing, or optical signal processing.
As an ideal candidate, you should also have one or more competences below:
A strong background in optical computing, or optical neural networks.
A comprehensive understanding of microelectronics
Experience with high-speed PCB and FPGA design, or high-speed transceivers.
Experience in simulation, design, and characterization of silicon photonics devices and circuits. Prior experience in a cleanroom environment is a plus.
Experience in research dissemination, either publications or presentations.
The ability to work independently while effectively collaborating in projects with both academic and industrial partners.
3 Tasks
our overall focus will be to strengthen the department’s competences within the field of optical computing and optical neural networks. You will work closely with colleagues, and with our collaborators in this project, both academic and industrial, across Europe.
Your primary tasks will include:
Carry out research and innovation on the integrated digital optical neural networks in the DOLORES project and conduct a proof-of-concept demonstration in a full PCB-scale assembly. You will work closely with our team at DTU electro and our collaborators in the DOLORES project for:
Designing and developing relevant silicon photonics integrated circuit (PIC).
Taping out the PIC design for foundry service (custom runs at Cornerstone, UK).
Collaborating with TNO, the Netherlands, for PIC packaging, PCB and FPGA design.
Collaborating with IMEC, Belgium, for integrating multiwavelength light source to the PCB assembly.
Collaborating with TU Eindhoven, the Netherlands, for interfacing the photonic IC with the post-processing electronic IC.
Conducting system demonstrations in real-world neural network applications such as natural language processing tasks in close collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
Disseminating your research findings in highly ranked peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings.
Strengthening our international collaboration with academic and industrial partners through your external stay.
Following courses on topics related with your project, either at DTU or other institution.
Contributing to teaching and supervision tasks at DTU.

Dr. Fan的研究集中于计算机体系架构与人工智能硬件系统,长期发表于ISCA、MICRO、ICLR、DAC等国际顶级会议。同时,Dr. Fan也与企业界 (Samsung AI, Intel等) 保持长期合作关系。
