Anyone can publish their ideas, especially when their voice feels almost too niche and bizarre. If you believe this, there is a high chance that you will enjoy making a zine. If this is a new idea to you, you will probably find a zine making practice refreshingly enjoyable.

Zine is a form of low-tech, unofficial, small-circulation indie publication. Zine culture originated from British punk fans’ fanzines in the 70s and can be traced back to Harlem black creatives in the 20s and American sci-fi community in the 30s. Although it is becoming more widely loved, zine culture is rooted in underground culture, and embodies the celebration of fringe voices that mainstream media struggle to include.

A zine is like all these things but not quite: magazine, graphic novel, art book, scrapbook… but if you happen to be into any of these mediums, you might find a familiar DIY spirit in zines. We also don’t consider zine an imported idea completely foreign to China until recently – we might be making it unknowingly already. Zine can be any style you want it -- public or private, complex or minimalistic. Publishing can be simple as that – to express and to share.

We believe everyone is entitled to express and to publish, and we hope to do that this time free of the constraints of platforms, technology, middlemen, or public opinions. By making a zine, you can actualize an obsession, a piece of idea, or a feeling you have been holding on to.In this workshop, 3 zine lovers will lead all participants to making their own zine from zero.
