Preface

Are you feeling isolated in a foreign land, surrounded by unfamiliar environment and lifestyles? Do language barriers prevent you from accurately expressing your thoughts when you seek help?

During times of anxiety, sadness or emotional distress, you might need a freidnly "stranger" who also speaks Chinese as their first language, understands the challenges of studying abroad, and is open to listen to your concerns without intruding on your personal life.

To address this need, the Chinese Psychological Student Association in Edinburgh (CPSA ED) has launched the "Chinese Peer-Listener Nightline" hotline service to provide a culturally-sensitive outlet for those seeking a compassionate ear and emotional support.

About the Listening

The listening slot is completely free.

Most of our listeners are students from the University of Edinburgh. They are not certified professional counsellors, but some holding COSCA listening skills certification, and the rest having at least six months of experience working on the hotline. They serve as volunteers for free.

Listners are similar in age to you, familiar with the city where you live, have basic knowledge of psychology, can empathise with you.

During the listening session, you can firstly state the purposes of the call, share your problems and the emotional support you need. Your listener will listen to your carefully,  accept your emotions, respect your past, and provide appropriate help within their capabilities.

Each listening session is

45 minutes

Names of both parties and

content of the conversation

are strictly confidential.

We value your privacy.

You can trust our Listeners

Each listener has undergone training in listening skills and has at least six months of listening work experience. Some listeners hold the Listening Skills Certificate qualified by COSCA.

Our listeners are not permitted to provide psychotherapy or counselling, engage in crisis intervention, offer diagnoses, contact callers privately, actively seek the caller's privacy details. They are also prohibited from disclosing any information about the caller's identity to any other individuals, organizations, or platforms.

If the caller presents a risk situation, the listener will assist in contacting professional organizations.

Agreement Signing

Every caller is required to carefully read and sign two agreements before starting the listening session: a Confidentiality Agreement and a Disclaimer.

Confidentiality Agreement:

During the listening process, the listener will keep all information strictly confidential, and internal members of the association will not have the right to know.

All listeners will not actively intersect with callers in real life, striving to remain as a 'stranger’.

Disclaimer:

Our hotline is not professional psychological counseling/therapy, crisis intervention, or a suicide intervention hotline. If such situations arise, please directly contact professional organizations for help.

For professional organizations, in addition to making an appointment with an NHS GP (NHS crisis or suicide intervention hotline 111), the following picture lists recommendations for psychological service organizations in Scotland. Each organization specializes in different areas, allowing you to contact and seek help according to your specific needs:
