Jingdezhen, the world-famed Porcelain Capital of China, has a 1700-year history of ceramic making and a rich cultural heritage. As a saying goes "China is well known in the world for its porcelain, and Jingdezhen is the most well-known center, with the highest quality porcelain in China".
A tour to Jingdezhen is perfect for Chinese porcelain and ceramic culture lovers. Here, you’ll not only learn the history and culture about porcelain, but also experience how exquisite ceramic is made in traditional ways.
Nowadays more and more young people flee away from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and Jingdezhen has become a holy land for Chinese youth who want to pursue the art of craftsmanship away from the city bustle.
There are about 50,000 Chinese and foreign ceramists and artists residing in Jingdezhen, and around 10% of them (5000 people) are foreign artists. They are known as the "景漂" pronunciation "Jing Piao", which means "Gone with the wind and settle in Jingdezhen". We will visit the International Ceramic and Art Center to see how they work on their pieces, to talk with them and learn their stories.
For history buffs and antique lovers, the Jingdezhen “ghost market” – named as such because it takes place before dawn – is the best for hunting down old pieces and antiques. Some market-goers arrive at the market as early as 4 am. It is said that the market only opens at night due to the suspicious origins of the items on sale. While it might be risky to buy plausible antique pieces, there are plenty of secondhand items from the nearer past – plates with the "Great Leap Forward" and "Great Cultural Revolution" elements and black-and-white posters from the ’80s.
We will also take pleasure in visiting Mr Lv's antique shop, Mr Lv has always been a crazy fan for all kinds of antiques, especially procelians. He bought his first piece of china when he was 27 years old, now he has a shop and a private collection of antiques and he is already in his 60s. His surname is Lv, in Chinese, this charactor "吕" consists of two mouths, no wonder he is quite a chatter box when it comes to antiques and stories behind them.
