Night-Mooring at Maple Bridge
By Zhang Ji
Moondown: crows caw. Frost, a skyful.
River maples, fishing lamps, sad drowsiness.
Beyond Su-Chou City, the Cold Mountain Temple
Rings its midnight bell, reaching this visitor’s boat.

Maple Bridge Night Mooring
When the moon slants ravens croak and cold airs grow
Bank maple groves and fishing glows invoke my woe.
From the Hanshan Temple outside Suzhou moat
The midnight tolls resound and reach my mooring boat.

River maples and lanterns saw the sad sleepless.
From the Hanshan Temple outside Suzhou Town
Midnight toll reached my boat at midnight high.

Night Mooring at Maple Bridge
The moon setting, crows crying, frost filling the sky;
maple leaves along river banks, lanterns on fishing boats, sorrowful sleep.
Outside Suzhou, from Cold Mountain Temple,
the sound of its bell travels to a traveler's boat in deep night.

Mooring by Maple Bridge in the Night
Crows were cawing
As the moon was setting across the frosty sky.
The sorrowful traveller was sleeping
Opposite river maples and fishing lights.
Bells ringing from the Cold Hill Temple
Outside the city of Suzhou
Was heard by the sleepless stranger on the boat
At dead of night.
