Application of Graphene Oxide in Cementitious Composites

Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising candidate for reinforcing cement composites due to its prominent mechanical properties and good dispersibility in water. However, the severe agglomeration of GO nanosheets in Ca2+ ion loaded environment of a freshly mixed cement composite is the main obstacle against the mentioned goal. Recent studies, based on the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, have declared that the incorporation of pozzolans can ameliorate the GO agglomeration in cement matrix. Therefore, studying the effects of pozzolanic materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and metakaolin on dispersion of GO in cementitious environments has attracted interest in recent years. Considering the fact that for identifying the GO dispersion in cement matrix, SEM characterization is not preferred due to the hydrated cement matrix complexity and presence of small dosages of GO, this research has investigated the potential application of different pozzolans against GO agglomeration in the non-hydrated environment of simulated cement pore solution for different pozzolans/GO weight ratios. Additionally, the interaction between pozzolans and GO in water is evaluated through different characterizations such as visual investigation, UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and the zeta potential measurements. Finally, the effect of the synergetic incorporation of GO and different pozzolans on mechanical properties of GO-pozzolans cementitious composites is presented.

报告人简介




Prof. Asghar HABIBNEJAD KORAYEM obtained his Bachelor and Master degree in Civil Engineering from Amirkabire University and Tarbiat Modarres University in 2000 and 2005, respectively. He received his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from Monash University in 2014.  Since March 2015, he is a Faculty Member of the School of Civil Engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), and is promoted to Associate Professor in January 2020. His research mainly focuses on experimental and theoretical approaches to integration of new technologies, nanocomposites based in cementitious context to 3D printing devices, and theoretical design of nanochannels, all based on novel perspectives of nanoparticles utilization.  Following this path, he partnered in two ARC Discovery Projects (116 million AU$ in total), both funded by the Australian Research Council. His years of continuous research in collaboration with scholars from Australia, US, and China have bear fruit in a dedicated team in experimental research and simulations and the founding of the Nanomaterials Research Centre in Iran University of Science and Technology in 2019. Results of the Prof. Habibnejad’s efforts have been reflected in his recognition as the 14th and 27th place among top 100 science elites in Iran’s National Science elite list in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
