Shenzhen is famed for its picturesque parks and extensive coastlines, most of which are often bustling with visitors during weekends and public holidays. If you are in research for a tranquil outdoor spot for a day of relaxation, look no further than this hidden gem.

That is the Pinghui (Pingshan-Huizhou) Wetland Trail, connecting three parks in Pingshan District. Although Pingshan is geographically an outskirt district in eastern Shenzhen, the operation of Metro Line 16 has made this recommended hiking route conveniently accessible.

The Pinghui Wetland Trail spans approximately 7 kilometers, starting at Qingsong Road at the northern end. As you head south along the Pingshan River, the first highlight is the Julong Mountain Wetland Ecological Park. Here, a vibrant field of Canna lilies is in full bloom to greet you, and their colors jump into view. The park’s lush greenery, shimmering river, occasional flocks of birds, the sounds of insects, intertwining vibrant colors and gentle breezes create a dreamy fairy-tale atmosphere, allowing visitors to enjoy a worry-free moment.

Julong Mountain Wetland Ecological Park combines environmental protection and wetland science education with recreational tourism. It offers an array of activities including wetland birdwatching and forest sightseeing, and features diverse zones such as wetlands, wildflower meadows, grasses, and fruit orchards. Hiking trails connect Julong Mountain and Julong Lake, enhancing the overall experience.

This park is built upon the area’s original pond landscape, seamlessly integrating landscape design with the wetlands. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll while savoring the soothing sounds of water, or find a peaceful corner to relax and unwind.

Upon reaching the southern end of the wetland trail, you will discover the Pingshan River Wetlands Park, characterized by a broad waterway, lush greenery and a sea of blossoming Plantain flowers.

There is no commercial establishments or artificial structures in sight, just an expansive grassland, reminiscent of the enchanting landscapes from the Wizard of Oz, in the park.

The Pinghui Wetlands Trail embodies a sense of seclusion, as it lies far from urban areas and remains relatively unknown. Its tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by the absence of nearby residential areas. The overall difficulty of the trail is low, making it easy to walk the entire route while visiting three parks along the way.

Pingshan, renowned for its ecological environment among Shenzhen residents, has been developing a "natural museum without walls" in recent years, with the goal of creating 15 nature study trails that weave through the district’s green mountains and rivers. The initiative aims to build a comprehensive nature-guided system for Pingshan.

The Pinghui Wetland Trail is one of these nature study paths. Along the trail, there are 30 natural observation points and curriculum distribution spots. With just a simple scan on a smartphone, visitors can access relevant natural knowledge and learn about the wetlands. The "Pingshan Comprehensive Nature Museum" mini-program, accessible via a QR code offers features such as online explanations, map navigation, image libraries, species identification, and route check-ins.

As these nature study trails have taken shape, Pingshan is gradually transforming into the premier outdoor classroom for Shenzhen residents to connect with nature.
