About the Programme
This programme presents the opportunity to join our international and interdisciplinary research community working within the fields of developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, neuroscience and neurocognition or social processes.
Developmental Psychology
How do we develop an understanding of the world around us? We look at cognitive, social, emotional and language development from before birth through to adolescence.
Cognitive Psychology
What are the fundamental cognitive processes behind language, learning, memory and attention? How does our understanding of cognition impact society?
Neuroscience and Neurocognition
How does the brain respond to different environments and govern cognitive function? We research how humans understand and process the world around us.
Social Processes
How do we develop definitions of morality or trust, and how do they affect our emotions in social interaction or decision making?
We welcome research proposals in a wide range of areas within psychology, but aligned with staff research expertise and interests. Please consult the https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/psychology/study/phd/ for further information and for current funding opportunities. We think of PhDs as student-led yet collaborative research projects.
The Department houses state-of-the art research facilities for work with infant, child and adult participants. A combination of dedicated and shared laboratories support a variety of methods including observation, eye-tracking, virtual reality, electro-encephalography, transcranial Doppler ultrasound and transcranial magnetic stimulation. There is also substantial expertise on online research using specialty software.
There are numerous opportunities to engage with the wider community of researchers in the department through our active research groups, multiple seminar series and journal clubs. Open science practices feature prominently in the department.
We provide extensive support and training to ensure that you are well equipped to make your work productive, effective and influential, ultimately leading to a successful and timely submission of a PhD thesis.
