A rising trend in China sees young couples opting for fast-food chains like McDonald’s as wedding venues, reflecting a significant shift in wedding preferences among Gen Z. This generation is increasingly prioritizing simplicity and affordability over traditional, lavish ceremonies.

One notable example occurred in Wuhan in May, where a couple exchanged vows beneath the iconic golden arches. They presented their rings in a box of fries and treated guests to Happy Meals. These so-called “McWeddings” serve as budget-friendly alternatives to conventional banquets, which average around 330,000 yuan ($45,000) in 2023. Couples appreciate this approach, as it allows them to save for other priorities, such as their honeymoons.

The trend also signifies a desire for simplicity, moving away from traditional customs like bridal hazing, and favors venues that do not serve alcohol, thus minimizing the risk of drunken misbehavior. The appeal of fast-food weddings has spread beyond mainland, with McDonald’s offering packages in Hong Kong starting at $385. These packages can include creative elements, such as a bouquet made of McNuggets.

Fast-food weddings have their roots in Hong Kong, where McDonald’s introduced its “McWedding” service as early as 2011. According to anthropologist Gordon Mathews of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, perceptions of McDonald’s vary significantly across cultures. While in the U.S. and other Western countries, fast food might be viewed as tacky for weddings, Hong Kong embraces it as a unique option.
