The Chinese/French Artists Exchange Program Season III was inaugurated in Shekou , marking the beginning of a series of exciting cultural activities in Nanshan District that will run through Nov. 25.

Under the theme of “Sci-Fi and Fantasy,” famous French illustrators and concept artists, including Gilles Francescano and Nicolas Petrimaux, attended the launching ceremony at the Wanxia Nature One center. They engaged in lively discussions and exchanged insights with Chinese sci-fi illustrator Zhao Enzhe and other domestic artists.
Francescano expressed his honor at visiting Nanshan District with his French counterparts, and shared his eagerness to connect with Chinese sci-fi novelists and artists, highlighting the importance of exchanging valuable experiences.

Shenzhen-based sci-fi novelist Hai Ya, who won the Best Novelette award at the 81st Hugo Awards for his work "The Time-Space Painter" last year, said at the inaugural ceremony that he looked forward to the expected creative sparks arising from this year’s exchange program through idea sharing.
Hai is the third Chinese writer to win the Hugo Award for Best Novelette, following steps of Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.

Following the ceremony, the Chinese/French SciFi and Fantasy Exhibition featured classic works by artists from the two countries, attracting a large number of Chinese and expat residents. The exhibited pieces covered a wide range of fantasy themes such as outer space, the deep sea and artificial intelligence. The exhibition will run through Nov. 25.
On Sunday afternoon, the visiting French artists will join their Chinese counterparts for an inspiring salon dialogue event at Nantou Ancient Town. During his keynote speech, Aleksi Briclot will introduce the creation process of Surtur — a comic book villain based on Norse mythology who is an enemy of Thor.

Briclot will also share insights from his collaboration with Marvel Studios' core visual design team, shedding light on the film industry and standard produciton procedures.
Alongside him will be illustrator and concept designer Petrimaux, who will briefly introduce the concepts of narrative and storyboarding in comic creation by drawing from his own works and projects. Francescano will share his experience working with students in the “Second Chance School” program, in which he encouraged each student to create an image reflecting their identity and aspirations, with an aim to open a window into their inner worlds through their artwork.
Chinese artists Zhao Enzhe, Hai Ya, Xiao Zhuangyue, and Liang Chaopo will join the French artists at the salon.
Renowned computer graphics artist Zhao secured the Best Professional Artist award last year in Paris. Hai, member of the China Writers Association, received the Best Novelette award at the 81st Hugo Awards for "The Time-Space Painter." Xiao, an internationally renowned CG artist, concept designer, and founder of the XRCG Academy, serves as the chief invited Chinese CG artist at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Liang is a film special effects expert and visual effects supervisor.
The Chinese/French Artists Exchange Program is hosted by Nanshan District Government, and organized by Nanshan District Foreign Affairs Office and Shekou Subdistrict Office. Initiated in November 2018, this marks the third season of the program, following the second edition in 2019.
