01【苏州园林】

四合院(courtyard)是一种历史类型住宅。它在中国很常见，最著名的则是在北京。在古代，一座四合院住着一个单一的大家庭。今天，许多现存的四合院还用作住房，但大都缺乏现代生活设施。四合院最早可以追溯到西周时期（the Western Zhou Period）,至今已有2000多年的历史。它们表现出中国建筑的优秀和基本特征。四合院还是北京的一个文化象征，也是探索古老生活方式的一个窗口。

03【胡同】
胡同是北京特有的一种古老的城市小巷,在世界上是独一无二的。北京胡同已有800多年的历史,纵横交错于皇城周围。胡同不仅是城市的交通脉络,更是百姓的生活场所。作为北京历史和文化发展的舞台,它见证了历史的变迁(vicissitudes)和风貌,留下了许多社会生活的印记,保留了原汁原味的(authentic)老北京民俗风情。要想真正了解、体味胡同,最好的办法就是亲自去走走、看看。那些古老的胡同,犹如滋味醇厚的佳肴,应当细细咀嚼、慢慢品味。

Hutong is an ancient city alleyway unique to Beijing. You can’t find it elsewhere in the world. Beijing Hutong has a history of more than 800 years, criss-crossing the imperial city. Hutongs are not only traffic lanes of the city but also places where people live.
