Computer Science
Purdue University GPA3.6 GRE328

When you do physics you’re playing against God; in finance, you’re playing against God’s creatures. 1. What does FE mean to you? 2. What do you think of NYC? 3. How would your peers describe your character? 4. What is your favorite food? 5. Questions for our team?

Northeastern University GPA 3.46 GRE 323
Econ.

Take a look at the students walking across the campus. Some are heading to a class, and others are buying coffee---this is what you may see. As a future marketing analyst, what I see is valuable demographic and behavioral information. I see prospective customers that businesses can target. The process of utilizing data to make a smart marketing decision is what inspires me to become a marketing analyst and brings me to Medill.
My experience with marketing begins with the first class I took in the School of Journalism. During Strategic Communication 345, we worked in groups to develop a strategic plan for Chick FiL-A. As a research director, I led the team to conduct market research and consumer analysis. Throughout the three months of group work, we set our target audience, came up with a TV commercial and social media campaign, and prepared press kits. From that experience, I learned that Integrated Marketing Communication is like the process of pursuing a romantic partner. We have first to conduct market research which is similar to finding our match. The deal target can't be too hard to reach but should be a specific person that we like and is likely to be attracted to us. Then, after setting the goal, it is time to get to know everything about this person and making ourselves stand out. Throughout this process, we need to convey a consistent message showing our unique selling points. We need to take advantage of various sources of help, and we have to be aware of what our competitors are doing and prepare for unexpected circumstances that might occur.
Though this might not be a perfect metaphor, it is how I understand what contributes to a collaborative process of getting the right product to the right person and maintaining a good relationship. I honed my skills in marketing and communication through internships and school organizations.
During my year working as an account executive for Bucky PR, I independently led a five-person group to come up with a social media strategy for TECH UW Madison. I found it challenging at first to coordinate with five people and to effectively transfer the client’s message to teammates. To tackle these problems, I led regular team meetings and had teammates choose their specialty areas from video production, social media account management, and client relations. Also, I encouraged teammates to come to client meetings so that they could be more actively involved and directly get to know the clients' thoughts.
Through building a website for TECH and producing multimedia content via social media platforms I developed interests in digital marketing. I wanted to earn more about how to effectively use these digital tools to drive marketing decisions and plans. To gain this knowledge, I worked as a digital marketing intern at Mid-west Family Marketing.
One day, as I was building a website for clients using HTML, I had the opportunity to meet with marketers from Google Analytics. I was excited because I have always been fascinated by how companies are using big data to analyze their consumers and personalize Internet content. After that meeting, I changed my career goal and decided to become a market research specialist using data analytic tools to help a company making decisions.
Each of my experiences in digital marketing or public relations has helped me to gain a deeper understanding of marketing and gradually to this career goal. This career decision brought me to IMC at Northwestern. I heard the name Northwestern from one of my professors, Stacy Foster, who also graduated from Medill. I'm interested in the program because it offers a great combination of theory and application, which is the most effective way of learning for me.
More importantly, the Consumer Insights and Analytics track aligns well with my interest and provides me with a chance to combine my experience in public relations with knowledge in computer science. My logical thinking and ability in data analysis will prepare me for courses such as quantitative and qualitative analysis and statistical modeling. Besides the course design, I’m very interested in the research projects of Professor Weinberger. I think gaining consumer data from data analytics tools is not enough; instead consumer decisions are a synergetic result of various social and cultural factors.
My long-term career is to become a mature market and consumer research director who combines hard data with consumer psychology. With Medill, I believe I’m making the right step towards my goal.

On a cold morning of December last year, I woke up in the narrow bed of a farm near the suburb of London. The sense of happiness came to me at such a moment not only because of the beautiful scenery outside the window but more importantly, the fulfillment brought by yesterday's food distribution activity in London, in which I assisted monks to give away food to people in need. The farm belongs to a temple, where I witnessed a harmonious coexistence of self-sufficiency and an "open economy". Money earned from tourist visits and wedding hosting is mainly used for weekly food distribution and irregular visits to refugee camps.
As an economics student. for the very first time, I am deeply proud of the modern economy allowing the easy exchange of service and goods into currency and here, on this small farm, the money goes to where people most need it. For a long period, the modern economy is wearing a hat labeled “selfish”. This seems to be verified by the most important assumption underlying the theory of economics that participants are rationale, or in other words, they intend to maximize their benefits. However, in realistic life, whether the modern economy goes good or bad, as we see in the example of the farm, truly depends on people's subjective will.
While this short volunteer experience in the farm impressed me with the charming part of the modern economy, I developed a better understanding of the role financial organization plays during my summer internship in the Industrial Bank, one of the largest commercial banks in China. To look for some inspiration for my essay topic How the Extent of Competition Affects the Risk-taking of Banks in China, I joined the faculty of Personal Loans, which could be one of the main sources of risk in the daily operation of this bank. My daily duty was to assess the credit reports of customers and prepare necessary documents for further processing of the loan applications.
I found that while it's true that full interest rate liberalization has almost realized in China the competition of banks by manipulating the loan interest rate to attract more customers, as once expected, does not appear. The interest rate for personal loans does not vary much among large commercial banks. I discussed with my senior about this problem and she explained to me that seeking long-term cooperation with real estate companies to earn a stable volume of customers applying for mortgages is the main way to compete with other banks in the field of personal loans. Besides, I took the opportunity to see how a loan application is processed within the bank and how the bank reduces the risk of taking bad loans by requiring different positions to evaluate those applications. In these two months, I got the opportunity to apply my theoretical knowledge to real issues and my horizon got greatly expanded by immersing myself in such a real-world business environment.
However, only with the solid knowledge grounding built during the past three years of academic experience can I get so much from my internship and volunteer experiences. It's a great fortune for me to study in two top universities with 207 different education ideas and modes. I spent the first two college years at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, majoring in finance and minoring in economics, where I formed a basic understanding of economics. The world of economics, from then, is gradually opening its door to me and I am fascinated by it. By taking a wide range of courses, I learned to appreciate economics from a theoretical perspective in microeconomics and macroeconomics and explain economic phenomena from a numerical perspective in econometrics. The financial and mathematical models I encountered during the study are challenging but fascinating. Besides, the school could not provide more chances for us to explore our interesting topics.
In the first semester of my second year, as a group leader, I worked with my classmates to study the efficiency of Chinese business incubators based on the special case of Innovation Works. To better indicate the status quo of business incubators in China in a numerical way, I collected data or 432 domestic incubators and apply the DEA model to the data to conduct a statistical analysis. Despite some imperfections in our final work, we got recognized by professors in the School Undergraduate Seminar and won third prize.
Later in 2015, I started my next two years at the University of Birmingham ready to take new challenges. What differs from my previous experience is that professors here tend to go deeper to show students the essence of some seemingly simple concepts and have a higher requirement towards our initiatives in the earning process, which inspired me to put more effort into the study. There are still some courses related to econometrics, which put more emphasis on the detection and correction of possible bias when a model is applied and the operation of econometric software like STATA and Eviews.
All these greatly complete my knowledge basis of econometrics. The most impressive course this year is the Regulatory Framework of Banking, not closely relevant to economics, from my perspective, but vital for understanding the behavior of banks.
In my daily life, I manage to achieve a balance between study and social activities. As the aging population arises to be a concern in many countries, including China, I actively take part in some volunteer activities aimed at caring for the elderly. We once found ten old couples who had no chances to take wedding pictures at their youth due to the war and were going to celebrate their golden wedding. They were invited to take wedding photos and their stories were recorded with cameras, then made into a short film to play in our school. I also had weekly visits to a couple who lost their only child twenty years ago and tried to comfort them. Apart from that, I worked in the sales department of a retail store at school, which is operated by students and has reached a monthly revenue of 0.1 million RMB. Staying in the store for one semester as an intern enhanced my skills in teamwork and negotiation.
During my undergraduate study, the program I attended put its emphasis on the theory of economics. However, I found myself truly fascinated by the course Corporate Finance Management, which is the only course closely related to finance during my study. I am interested in the CAMP model and the theory of market efficiency, and I enjoy comparing the pros and cons of different capital structures and dividend policies. My enthusiasm drove me to put lots of effort into it, and I did pretty well in this module.
However, I understand that the knowledge about the financial market covered in this course is only the iceberg and I am eager to deepen my understanding of this topic. Besides, on a rare occasion, one of my professors talked to me about her recent study, which raised my great interest in the bilateral market where many parties actively interact with each other and hence complex relationship forms. I feel that only by taking more advanced courses in microeconomics could I better comprehend the sophisticated relationship within the market and find explanations for it. The tools provided in econometrics and the ability to conduct independent research are also what I intend to acquire to better evaluate my ideas.
The Finance and Economics program exactly offers what I desire in my academic advancement. During my study in the UK, I have seen the advanced nature of education here and how it suits me for further education. The University of Cambridge is such a prestigious school that has given birth to so many academic giants whom I fully look up to. Hopefully, I could get the chance to stand on the shoulders of these giants and make my contribution to this great school.
