Hello I’m Jason. Some of you probably already know me from your English Speaking and listening classes this semester. I was born in Canada but had spent a dozen years in Hong Kong and a dozen years in Canada. My experience has allowed me to appreciate the differences of the culture from the East and the West. I hope that by hosting these English salons, we can discuss about different interesting topics and share our opinions. Ever since I have taken an interest in teaching English, I’ve prioritized language production in my lessons. I believe that a good English lesson is dependent on the active participation from the students, the teacher’s job is merely a facilitator. These English salons are designed so that you can have ample time for you to speak English.
If you are already one of my students, then you know my style, you will have lots of opportunities to have fun with your friends. If you don’t know me yet, feel free to join to meet new people and practice your English while having an interesting discussion with the others. Some of the topics are quite controversial even in the West, so I would love to hear your opinions. I look forward to sharing my experience abroad and discussing different interesting topics with you.
The purpose of these salons is to stimulate your thoughts. We will discuss trending issues and perhaps find a different perspective that you didn’t think was possible before.
English allows you to exchange information with the international community. These salons provide opportunities for you to improve your language skills and critical thinking.
Many students believe they are thinking critically when they can challenge or raise critical questions about perspectives they believe are wrong, but there is more to it.
Critical thinking involves not only challenging ideas you already firmly believe but also evaluating external perspectives and evidence. It’s about asking deeper, logical questions about your own beliefs and values, as well as assessing the arguments of others with an open mind.
That being said, the most important part of these salons is for you to have fun and make friends. Don’t worry about your English level; you can always discuss in a mix of Chinese and English if that’s what you prefer. It is a respectful environment. My priority is always to make these salons as enjoyable as possible.
