What to Wear in Harbin

If you are indoors, you can wear a thin sweater or a thin hoodie plus woolen trousers. If venturing outside, you must wear a thick sweater, a thick cotton-padded coat or down jacket, a wool hat and a cotton mask, snow boots, gloves, and scarf because of the cold climate in Harbin in February.

Other Tips

Your hands and ears are vulnerable to frostbite because of extreme cold climate in Harbin in December, so you’d better take chilblain cream. The big temperature difference between indoor and outdoor can easily cause a cold; therefore, cold medicines are requisite, as well as medicine for gastroenteritis. December is peak tourist season in Harbin, so you are advised to decide your travel plan as early as possible and book flight tickets and hotels in advance.

Ice and Snow World

First set-up by the Harbin Municipal Government in 1999, Harbin Ice and Snow World is by far the largest ice and snow art exhibition in the world. It is commonly referred to as possessing four of the key 'mosts': the most art attractions, the most beautiful night views, the most recreational activities and the most forms of entertainment. Furthermore, the festival is constantly evolving and each year brings with it a new theme, providing visitors with a totally unique experience from one year to the next.

The ice carvings at the Harbin Ice and Snow World are regarded as some of the world's finest examples of ice art, with visitors able to admire some of the largest and most majestic ice-sculpted masterpieces. Each of these ice carvings is designed in some way related to the festival's theme, enabling travelers to sample a variety of cultural flavors.

One of the highlights for any visitor to the festival is to visit the site at night when multicolored lights set underground illuminate the sculptures, revealing a whole new colorful dimension to the exhibits. The contrasts of the bright and dazzling lights against the dark night sky make the works look all the more spectacular.

St. Sophia Cathedral

Saint Sophia Cathedral, located in Sophia square, daoli district, Harbin city, Heilongjiang province, China, is a Byzantine orthodox church built in 1907, which is the landmark building of Harbin. In history, there used to be many cathedrals in Harbin, but only a few remained because so many people destroyed them during the cultural revolution. Thus, Sophia cathedral becomes very precious and rare, and becomes a world-famous ancient building.

Basic Facts about the St. Sophia Cathedral:

Harbin St.Sophia Cathedral was built in March 1907. It was originally a military church built for the Middle East railway of the 4th infantry division of eastern Siberia of Russia. It is all wood structure covering an area of 721 square meters, with a total height of 53.35 meters, which is a typical Byzantine-style architecture.In 1911, a brick wall was built outside the wooden wall to form a brick and wood structure church. On September 27, 1923, St.Sophia Cathedral held the second foundation stone ceremony for reconstruction. Completed on November 25, 1932, it has become the largest eastern orthodox church in the far east area, which is famous for its exquisite architecture and rich historical and cultural connotations all over the world.

The entire architecture is in a Byzantine style, with a standard large dome in the main building, which looks magnificent and spacious. The church is designed as a Latin cross  from east to west. The walls are all made of red brick, with a large and full onion dome on the top, and the tent roofs in different sizes on the four sides. The four storiesare connected by stairs, with four doors to the front, back and right. The top of the front door is the bell tower, and the seven bronze bells are exactly seven notes, which can be heard in a cadenced melody.

Nowadays, St.Sophia cathedral is awell-preserved typical Byzantine architecture in China. The architecture, which was born nearly 100 years ago, is magnificent, simple and elegant, and full of attracting charms. The whole square embodies the beautiful melody of music and the light of architectural wisdom. The scenic area has a modern professional exhibition hall, with nearly a thousand beautiful pictures showing the history, present situation and future of the famous cultural city Harbin. With a scale of 1:600 and an area of nearly 400 square meters, the large-scale urban planning sand table usesadvanced sound, light, electricity, lifting and other high-tech means to depict the grand blueprint of Harbin in the future, where people not only can appreciate the elaborate ancient architecture but also have a chance to know deeply about Harbin.

Snow Town

Snow Town is also known as Shuangfeng (“Twin Peaks”) Forest Farm. The snow quality here is very good, with high cohesion. In the wintertime, you can see many snowbanks naturally formed into all kinds of styles, including the famous “snow mushroom.” You can experience the excitement of wintertime by skiing, snow tubing, or having a snowball fight. Or head over to lively Xueyun Street to buy a frozen persimmon or the Xuexiang Dream Home to see a beautiful “snow mushroom.” There is no end to the fun. Harbin Dining

What to Eat

Although it is not included in the Chinese Eight Cuisines, Harbin cuisine still has its own specialties thanks to its special geographical position and long history. Local cuisine of Manchu mixes with Shandong Cuisine and exotic Russian cuisine, to give the important components of the existent Harbin cuisine, even the Heilongjiang cuisine. Like the warm hearted and straightforward locals, the local dishes tend to feature hot and dense, strong flavors. Even then the original flavor is still maintained as few spices are used.

Based on traditional cooking skills and local materials, a series of famous banquets was invented by the locals people. Of the banquets the most well known is the Fly Dragon Banquet, best prepared by Harbin International Restaurant. The others include Mountain Delicacies and Wild Delight Banquet, Hedgehog Fungus Banquet and Flavor of North China.

It should be mentioned that the locals also prefer fresh vegetables eaten cold with soy sauce or dipped in sauce. Flour based foods and rice are the daily staples of locals. Among them, dumplings are considered to be the predominant. Approximately ten kinds of dumplings with different stuffing can be sampled here. We recommend the Dongfang Jiaozi Wang (the king of eastern dumplings).

Harbin Dumplings

Chinese:东北饺

Pinyin: dōng běi shuǐ jiǎo

Dumplings play an important role for Harbin Cuisine. To some extent, the daughter-in-law must be able to make dumplings to be considered part of the family. There are many restaurants in Harbin only selling dumplings. On the menu of dumpling restaurants, you could find various types of dumplings, but two that are always ordered are the Pork and Chive Dumplings and Pork and cabbage dumplings. These tasty dumplings are made with a mixture of pork and chives or cabbages. If you are vegetarians, you can order the dumplings with vegetables only, like fresh mushroom stuffing, carrots and com kernels.

Harbin Sausage

Chinese:哈尔滨红肠

Pinyin: hā ěr bīn hóng cháng

If you go to Harbin, sausage with irresistible European flavor is sure not to be missed. This widely welcomed specialty is called Red Sausage because of its purplish red skin. They are cured meats made of the ingredients of flour, lean pork, a layer of casing, starch, salt, garlic and so on.

Harbin Madier Ice Cream

Chinese:马迭尔冰棍

Pinyin: mǎ dié ěr bīng gùn

There are several flavors you can choose from, and the most popular are those in vanilla flavor. It tastes a little salty but also sweet and milky. Do remember to try it even if you are not a sweet tooth.

Russia Coffee & Food

Thanks to its proximity to Russia and the long tradition of Russian immigration, Harbin is one of the best places in China for getting a more genuine taste for Russian Cuisine. Borscht, beef stroganoff, Russian beer, fruit pizza and caviar can be easily found at the city.

Guobaorou (Crispy Sweet and Sour Pork)

Chinese:锅包肉

Pinyin: guō bāo ròu

Guobaorou, or known as Crispy Sweet and Sour Pork, is another famous member of northeastern style food (known as Dong Bei). This dish uses a special sauce called tangcuzhi (糖醋汁), which literally means “sugar and vinegar sauce” and mostly just a combination of sugar and vinegar.

Disanxian

Chinese:地三鲜

Pinyin: dì sān xiān

Dì Sān Xiān is a traditional home-cooked dish in northeast China (Harbin is included). Dì refers to the farm land. And Sān Xiān means three fresh stuffs in English. Therefore, Dì Sān Xiān can be literally translated as the three treasures from the earth. And in fact, the three treasures are potatoes, green pepper and eggplant. This dish is extremely delicious.

A Variety of Stews

Chinese: 炖菜

Pinyin: dùn cài

There are eight most famous stews, including Braised Pork with Vermicelli, Stewed Chick with Mushroom, Stewed Spare-ribs With Green-bean, Braised Beef with Potatoes, Lamb Stew with Sauerkraut, Braised Catfish with Eggplant and Demoli Fish Stew. It looks like comparative lack of exquisite for all the ingredients are chopped into big chumps laying in the big bowl without appropriate order.

DaLieba (Big Bread)

Chinese: 大列巴

Pinyin: dà liè bā

DaLieba is a kind of sourdough bread that larger than your face. Its name Lieba (khleb) in Russian means bread. “Da” in Chinese means Big. So, Dalieba is literally means Big Bread. Most of the Big Bread are in oval, some also rod-like. Malt in the recipe of Big Bread gives it the peculiar sour sweet taste and delicate flavor.

Grilled Cold Noodles

Chinese: 烤冷面

Pinyin: kǎo lěng miàn

Grilled Cold Noodles is one of the most famous street foods in Harbin. The name of this snack didn't really make any sense - Kao Leng Mian, which literally translates to Grilled Cold Noodles.  This snack is kind of delicious fried dough slices with egg, scallions, lettuce, chopped onions, and cilantro and hot sauce or tomato sauce. Usually, it is served in a paper bowl with two glorified toothpicks that can either be used to as makeshift chopsticks.

Harbin Beer
