Tianluokeng tulou cluster (simplified Chinese: 田螺坑土楼群; traditional Chinese: 田螺坑土樓群; pinyin: Tiánluókēng tǔlóu qún) is one of the better known groups of Fujian tulou. It is located in the village of Tianluokeng (lit.: 'snail pit') in the town of Fujian, Nanjing County, southern Fujian province.
The cluster consists of a square earth building at the center of a quincunx, surrounded by four round earth buildings (or more exactly, 3 round earth buildings and one oval shape earth building), figuratively nicknamed "四菜一汤" (pinyin: sìcài yītāng; lit.: 'four dishes with a soup'.
A tulou (lit. "earth building") is a unique architecture found only in the mountainous areas bordering Fujian and Guangdong in southern China. The "Earth building" is an enclosed buildings, usually square or circular in shape, with a very thick earth wall (up to 6 feet thick) and wooden skeletons, from three to five stories high, housing up to 80 families. These earth buildings have only one entrance, guarded by 4–5-inch-thick (100–130 mm) wooden doors re-enforced with an outer shell of iron plate. The top level of these earth building have gun holes for defense against bandits. In spite of the earth wall, some of them are more than 700 years old, surviving through centuries of natural elements, including earthquakes, yet still standing solid. There are more than 35,000 earth buildings to be found in southern China, among them a little over 3,000 have been classified as Fujian Tulou
On July 7, 2008, at the UNESCO 32nd session held in Quebec City, Canada, the Tianluokeng Tulou cluster was inscribed as one of 46 Fujian Tulou World Heritage Sites.
The five earth buildings at the Snail Pit village are:
The square earth building named Buyun building(Reaching the Cloud building) at the center of the quincunx. It was the first earth building at this site, built in 1796. It is three stories high, each story has 26 rooms, four sets of stairs, and a circular corridor in front of the rooms. The Buyun building was burnt down by bandits in 1936, and rebuilt in 1953 according to the original shape.
The Hechang building, a three story high round earth building.
Zhenchang building, three story, round shape, 26 rooms per story, built in 1930.
Ruiyun building, built in 1936.
The last Wenchang building of 1966, 3 stories, 32 rooms per story.
Gulangyu is directly off the southeastern coast of China, and the quaint tourist attraction is part of the bustling city of Xiamen. The island is famous for its natural beauty, colonial style architecture and a myriad of interesting museums.
Besides the island's historic significance as an international port, Gulangyu is a great place to escape from city traffic and highrise, though Xiamen has consistently been voted as one of the most livable cities in China, and Gulangyu Island has been recognized as one of Fujian Province's most scenic places.
Shuzhuang Garden
Shuzhuang Garden is a tranquil oasis that is a must see for horticulture enthusiasts. The lush garden grounds are a visual feast that artistically melds with natural features like native trees, flowering plants and bushes, cliffs and rock formations.
Shuzhuang Garden is very near the sea, but the layout of the grounds and the customized cupolas, walls and bridges hide the view until one reaches the section of the garden that uniquely frames the seascape for a nice spectator surprise. The dramatic yet peaceful grounds are a must see by all island visitors.
There is a piano museum (钢琴博物馆) inside the garden, which worth a visit for the amazing collection of pianos. Visitors who arrive at the museum at ideal times are treated to free concerts.
Yunshuiyao town is an ancient village with a long history, the quiet long road, a hundred years old Banyan, magical earth building, and the Green hill and water, all give a person with sense of detachment. There is a famous Chinese movie filmed in this location known as Yunshuiyao, which means a song for cloud and water in Chinese, perfectly matching the scenery in this village. Walking from the south of Yunshuiyao, and along the ancient path toward north to reach Huai Yuan Lou, it looks beautiful of this tulou house from far with the surrounding greens and mountains. This is one of the beautiful tulou houses in term of the main entrance decoration. He Gui Lou is the highest tulou house in Fujian. It indicates that He Gui Lou has more than 200 years of history as the traditional Chinese rammed earth construction technology had reached its crest.
