Songpan Ancient Town
Dec 22/25/29
Morning
Today we will start with the Huanglong National Scenic Reserve (100km away), a gem in China natural scenery tours.Situated in Songpan County in the northwest of Sichuan, Huanglong is famous for its colorful lakes, snow-capped peaks, glaciers, mountain landscape, diverse forest ecosystems, waterfall and hot springs. The Multi-colored Ponds of different sizes and shapes show various dreamlike colors of yellow, blue, green and brown. In this fairyland, there is also an ancient temple, Huanglong Monastery, which was said to be built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). When visiting the temple, you can have a short rest there.
Afternoon
Songpan is a relaxed little town of ornate gates and bridges that serves as a gateway to the heavily Tibetan regions of northern Sichuan. Built during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) and later rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), Songpan was an important trading hub for horses and tea between Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai and Tibet. It was also a military post and in 1935, Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai led the retreating Chinese Communist Army through the plateau of Songpan to advance to the northwestern provinces.
In addition to its history and lush mountain scenery, Songpan’s location also contributes to its cultural diversity. The four ethnic groups of Songpan—Tibetan, Qiang, Hui (Muslim) and Han Chinese—have their own culture and customs, but the four overlap in the town’s unique to Kangba Culture.

Jiuzhaigou National Park, aka Jiuzhai Valley National Park or Jiuzhaigou Valley, is located in Jiuzhaigou County, 450 kilometers (280 miles) to the north of Chengdu. Its name is due to the existence of nine stockaded villages of Tibetan origin, and it is always regarded as a holy mountain and watercourse by the Tibetan people.
Jiuzhaigou National Park is a great masterpiece of nature having dreamlike scenery, which combines blue lakes, waterfalls, verdant forests, snow-covered mountains, and the folk customs of the Tibetan and Qiang peoples. Legend has it that long long ago the deity of mountain named Dago had a crush on the goddess Semo, and he gave a mirror that was made from wind and cloud to the goddess. However, the devil appeared and made trouble to Semo. Inadvertently, Semo broke the mirror into 108 pieces, which fell down to the earth and then turned to 108 colorful lakes. The lake is also called Haizi by local people.
In addition to the dreamlike sceneries, there are numerous flora and fauna in Jiuzhaigou National Park. The natural forest covers an area of nearly 30,000 hectares (about 74,132 acres), including 2,576 higher plant species (24 species of national protected plants) and over 400 lower plant species (212 species of algae). There are Panda Lake Waterfall which has the longest drop in Jiuzhaigou Valley and freezes to a crystal world in winter, the giant calc-sinter beach Pearl Beach, the Arrow Bamboo Lake that has a large area of bamboo, the favorite food of pandas, and Swan Lake where swans inhabit ...
Wonders
//Lakes
Water is the spirit of Jiuzhai Valley. There are 114 individual Lakes in the park that span over 1,000m in altitude. It is said that these lakes were formed when a young boy presented the goddess Woluo Semo with a mirror made of wind. The goddess breaks the mirror and 114 pieces fall to the earth and the sparkling gem-like lakes of Jiuzhai Valley are formed. “The Fairyland of Earth” was created.
// Forests
Forests cover more than half of the scenic area and much of the area not covered is above the tree line. As seasons alternate, the colours of the deciduous species change the face of Jiuzhai Valley. Jiuzhai’s tree and shrub species include firs, spruces, honeysuckles, azaleas, rhododendrons and bamboo.
// Waterfalls
There are 5 major waterfalls and numerous smaller waterfalls throughout the park. The Nuo Ri Lang Waterfall is the widest travertine topped waterfall in the world. All of Jiuzhai Valley’s scenic sites were formed as a result of the build up of snow during the Quaternary period which led to the development of Jiuzhai Valley’s glaciers. These glaciers subsequently cut and carved out the valley sides and floors creating Jiuzhai Valley as we know it today.
Songpan Ancient Town, situated in Jin'an Town of Songpan, is nearly 322 km (200 miles) from Chengdu (the capital city of Sichuan Province). Historically, it was known as Songzhou Town and was considered the 'West Portal of Sichuan'. Due to its advantageous situation geographically, it functioned as a military base from the time of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It has recently gained a reputation as one of the most interesting historical towns in Sichuan Province.
Upon entering Songpan Ancient Town, visitors will immediately be impressed by the grand and ancient constructions before them. Although founded in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the city gates and city wall here have all been fairly well-preserved through the centuries.
Songpan Ancient Town as a whole consists of both an inner city and an outer city. There are five city gates in the inner city, facing north, south, east, west and southwest. There are also two city gates in the outer city. Each gate was built from vast flagstones, with its ceiling shaped in a semi circle. Stones at the base of the gates are embellished with delicate engravings.
Constructed from giant blue bricks, each of which is twenty inches long, ten inches wide and five inches thick, the city wall is approximately four miles long and over 10m (33 feet) high, covering an area of nine square miles. The bricks were made of sticky rice, lime and Chinese wood oil and each weighs 30 kilograms, guaranteeing the strength of the city wall.
//Tibetan Culture
The local people still hold onto many of their traditional customs and culture. Local food and drink traditionally include barley, yak meat and mutton. Barley is the main staple which is used for yak butter tea, barley wine, barley bread and in other dishes. The main religion practiced by the Jiuzhai Valley local population is the pre-Buddhism Bon or Benbo-Sec religion. It was introduced to the Aba Prefecture in the 2nd century B.C. In the 7th century, Tibetan Buddhism was introduced to the region. Although through numerous conflicts Buddhism did become prevalent, the Benbo Sec religion has survived and developed, and is now recognised as one of the five sects of Tibetan Buddhism.
