Shanghai is bracing for heavy rainfall and strong winds as Super Typhoon Kong-rey, the 21st typhoon of the year, approaches, strengthened by both its outer circulation and cold air.
Typhoon Kong-rey, currently southeast of Taiwan, has winds reaching 17 levels (center pressure: 925 hPa) and will likely make landfall over southern or central Taiwan on October 31 before moving north along the Chinese coast.
This will bring heavy rains to Shanghai from Thursday night through Friday afternoon, with winds up to 8-9 levels on land and 10-11 along the coast. Rainfall could reach extreme levels, with totals between 120-180 mm citywide and up to 220-280 mm in southeastern districts, possibly marking the heaviest November rain since 1981. Peak hourly rain rates may hit 40-70 mm.
Please stay tuned to the latest updates as the situation unfolds, and if possible, remain indoors to ensure your safety.
