—— Alice Yu
02
——Jacky Meng
03
——Cyrus Chang

On the morning of September 14, students from Class 1, Grade 8 of Tsinglan School's Middle School Division embarked on a volunteer service trip to the Si'an Leprosy Rehabilitation Village in Dongguan.
The inspiration for this visit came from a Chinese class where a classmate recommended the book My Friends Come From 1918. The book records the daily lives and interactions between the author, Xie Cuiping, and 26 elderly leprosy survivors.
Through this book, the students came to know these lively and endearing seniors and felt a desire to visit them in person. They hoped that this visit would allow them to see the world beyond their own and meet those who had lived through a different era.
Arriving at the rehabilitation village, we were greeted by bright sunlight and rows of tall trees standing proudly in the light. Walking along shaded paths, golden sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting gentle rays on the moss-covered ground.
The village felt like a serene paradise, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. In this peaceful setting, the elders live simple yet fulfilling lives.
In celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, we prepared a variety of performances to bring joy and warmth to the elders, including magic shows, musical performances, singing, and dancing. The elders, with satisfied smiles, enjoyed the performances, and the atmosphere was filled with laughter.
Although they have endured the hardships of being leprosy survivors, these seniors were as endearing as children. Despite all the pain they have experienced and the wisdom they’ve gained from life’s trials, they continue to live with joy and optimism.
Among the elders, one left a particularly deep impression on us. His name is Uncle Peng, a well-known artist in the village. He came to the Si'an Leprosy Rehabilitation Village in 1975 and has lived here for nearly 50 years. Despite losing his fingers to leprosy, he never stopped painting or practicing calligraphy, earning the title of "fingerless artist."
Over the years, Uncle Peng created numerous artworks and calligraphy pieces, which he sold, donating all the proceeds to those in need. He humbly mentioned that his paintings are no longer as good due to his age. However, when he showed us two of his works, we couldn’t help but marvel at their beauty.
The flowers in his paintings bloomed with vibrant hues, much like the resilience and strength of the elders in the village.
After the event, many of us had heartfelt reflections. Here are a few excerpts:
01
I deeply felt that the best way to bring warmth to the elders is by listening to their stories, sharing in their joy, and letting them feel that the world still cares for and loves them.
—— Alice Yu
02
At first, I felt uneasy when I saw their disabled bodies, but by the time we were giving gifts, I, along with everyone else, was smiling as we greeted them. Their heartfelt smiles were contagious. I really enjoyed this event—it made me realize how strong, optimistic, and kind people can be. I will always remember them and this village.
——Jacky Meng
03
When I first entered the village, it was completely different from what I had imagined. Despite their disabilities, the elders had a positive and optimistic attitude toward life, always smiling, which I found truly admirable. We should eliminate our prejudice and discrimination against them, offering more care and support. They need more attention and help from society. After this visit, I even joined a charity’s monthly donation program, hoping that my small contribution can bring them a bit of warmth.
——Cyrus Chang
From Books to Reality. During this activity, we not only learned about the elders’ past through their stories but also connected deeply with their emotions.
Each elder had their own unique personality and charm, which made them truly special.
These elders deeply touched our hearts, and perhaps one day, we will return to this beautiful place to watch flocks of egrets soar into the blue sky alongside them.
