On October 9, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025 were released.

This year saw a record number of participating institutions, with 2,092 universities from 115 countries and regions included in the rankings, marking a 9.7% increase from last year’s 1,907—a significant rise, the largest in the past five years.

The performance indicators for this ranking are still divided into five areas, but the names have changed to: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry.
The performance indicators are as follows:
  • Teaching (Learning Environment): 29.5%
  • Research Environment: 29%
  • Quality of Citations: 30%
  • International Outlook: 7.5%
  • Industry: 4.0%
  Key insights
  • Oxford holds on to the top spot for the ninth consecutive year, bolstered by significant improvements in industry engagement and teaching
  • MIT rises to second place, overtaking Stanford, which drops to sixth
  • China edges closer to the top 10, further boosting its global research influence
  • Australia’s top five universities all slip down the rankings, due to declining reputation and international outlook
  • Three new countries join the top 200 - Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates - highlighting the rise of emerging markets in higher education
In the Chinese mainland, two universities made it into the top 20, four into the top 50, seven into the top 100, and 13 into the top 200. This is a stark contrast to seven years ago, in 2018, when only two Chinese institutions were ranked among the top 100.
Tsinghua University maintained its position as the highest-ranked university in the Chinese mainland for the seventh consecutive year, followed closely by Peking University, which ranked 12th and 13th in the world, respectively. Fudan University rose to third place among the Chinese mainland universities, moving up from 44th to 36th globally. Zhejiang University also made significant strides, advancing from 55th to 47th in the world, marking its first entry into the top 50.
In total, 94 universities from the Chinese mainland were ranked, up from 86 last year, placing the country fifth in the world for the number of institutions included. The United States topped the list with 174 universities, followed by Japan with 119, and India and the United Kingdom, which both had 107.
Here is the list of the top 50 universities.
