In the exhibition titled "Beyond the Gaze," featuring a series of photos from artist Baomei's 12-month journey across Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somaliland, Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. We intend to explore the dialogue in photography that breaks the boundaries between the unfamiliar and the familiar, the photographer(s) and the individual(s) being photographed, posing the question: “Who is the Other now?” We want to invite the audience into this conversation between both ends of the camera.
Through this exhibition, we hope to offer a sense of warmth and intimacy across cultures and beyond the stereotypes, prompting contemplation of how Self and Other intertwine and how cross-cultural interactions shift under digitalization.
In the end, we want to propose these questions: How can we break the walls of stereotypes and prejudices? How can we see behind these walls? How can we draw each other closer? How can we truly see each other?
