Foreign Teacher Dismissed for Improper Remarks During Online Class
On September 17, a video posted by a blogger revealed that a foreign teacher on the children's online English learning platform, Lingostar, claimed Taiwan was not part of China during a lesson. When a parent corrected the teacher, he responded by making an offensive gesture and abruptly left the live class.
On September 19, a Xiandai Kuaibao reporter contacted Lingostar, and a company representative confirmed that a statement had been issued regarding the incident.
The statement reads: "The company firmly upholds the 'One China' principle, and the teacher involved has been terminated and will not be rehired under any circumstances."
According to the statement, the incident occurred during a class on the evening of September 12. The foreign teacher, identified on the platform as “TeacherPaulUK,” was a probationary instructor. Upon monitoring the situation, Lingostar immediately dismissed the teacher and permanently barred him from future employment. The company also emphasized that before starting work, all teachers are required to sign a responsibility agreement prohibiting political statements during lessons. The teacher in question deliberately violated this agreement during the session.
The video shared by the blogger shows the teacher claiming to be from the UK and having lived in Taiwan.
Lingostar, a Singapore-based online education platform, is known for its one-on-one live English lessons taught by British and American teachers, specifically targeting children aged 5 to 13. The platform operates in China through licensed partners such as Shenzhen Zhixing Zhiyuan Educational Technology Co., Ltd., and Beijing Xideling Educational Technology Co., Ltd.
