When you mention Moscow to people in Beijing, they think of more than just the capital of Russia. They also think of a restaurant known as "Lao Mo".
Situated next to the Beijing Exhibition Center, "Lao Mo" is actually called the Moscow Restaurant. It opened in October 1954. In the hearts of Beijing residents, "Lao Mo" is more than just a restaurant; it carries the memories and feelings of a generation and provides Beijingers with a window into the Russian culture.
Strolling through the streets of Moscow, you can easily find Chinese cuisine from Lanzhou noodles to Peking duck and even a Chinese-style subway station.
In the 1950s, as Beijing was gearing up to build its subway system, experts from Moscow came to lend a hand.
Now the influence has come full circle. Chinese elements can now be found in the Moscow Metro as well. The Michurinsky Prospekt station built by Chinese company was designed with Chinese cultural elements. The station's platforms are dominated by the color red and feature plum blossoms and The Eight Immortal, becoming a new landmark of China-Russia friendship.
Xiong Jiuling, director general of the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, said: "Moscow is one of Beijing's most important sister cities, with a long-standing history of friendly exchanges. As early as the 1950s government delegations from Beijing and Moscow conducted mutual visits."
Xiong said, "Russian culture is an indelible memory for older Beijingers through classic songs such as Moscow Nights and Katyusha, and Russian-style architecture such as the Beijing Exhibition Center and the Moscow Restaurant are part of modern Beijing, and are now a big draw for young people."
Now exchanges between Beijing and Moscow come in many more forms than in gastronomy and architecture.
A growing number of Russians are learning Chinese, and schools in Moscow have even started offering Chinese classes. More Russian tourists are also visiting Beijing to experience the city's unique blend of ancient and modern attractions.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic relations. In June, Beijing celebrated the "Moscow Day". In August, the Chinese military band made its debut on Moscow's Red Square, bringing traditional Chinese musical instruments to an enthusiastic audience.
