Small Grapes Make a Big Industry
The winds blowing from the depths of the Helan Mountains, the soil mainly composed of light grey calcareous soil, gravelly soil, and eolian soil, and the local climate—scant rainfall, abundant sunshine, and large diurnal temperature variations, together with water from the ever-flowing Yellow River, all of these have endowed the grapes with fully developed aroma, good wine coloration, and a delicate balance between sugar and acidity. Benefiting from these factors, the eastern foot of the Helan Mountains in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has become the largest contiguous wine grape planting area in China and been considered as a rising star in the global wine fraternity. Over the past four years, Helan County has continuously integrated wine production into the development of local industries such as tourism, which has increased income of local people of various ethnic groups.
