In the vibrant and historic city of Nanjing, CHAP, in collaboration with Snøhetta, has created the Nanjing Jiangning District Library and Cultural Center. This is more than a functional cultural landmark—it is a harmonious convergence of nature and urban life, embodying wisdom and art.
With a total floor area of approximately 120,700 square meters, the project is situated in the Xiaolongwan area of Jiangning District. It consists of two main components: the library, a sanctuary of knowledge offering serene spaces for reading and learning; and the cultural center, a dynamic hub of artistic expression providing diverse cultural experiences. Through thoughtful design, the two structures are tightly interconnected in both function and aesthetics, yet independently distinct, striking a perfect balance between introspection and outward vibrancy.
A Fusion of Culture and Nature, A Continuation of City and History
The Nanjing Jiangning District Library and Cultural Center is a seamless integration of nature, architecture, and culture. With features like sunken plazas, riverside terraces, and rooftop gardens, the project harmonizes with the scenic Xiaolongwan River. It serves not only as a repository of knowledge and art but also as a cultural space that grows with the city, carrying the historical memories of Nanjing while shaping its future urban identity.
We envision this landmark becoming an integral part of residents’ daily lives and a cultural gateway for visitors to explore Nanjing. Whether pursuing knowledge or appreciating art, this cultural icon promises every visitor a unique and inspiring experience.
Library: A Spiraling Journey of Knowledge
The library’s design centers around a courtyard, with spiraling floor slabs that create a continuous flow for exploration. From the moment visitors step inside, they embark on a journey to a realm of knowledge. Each floor revolves around the courtyard, offering a fluid spatial experience while housing diverse themes and functions. The courtyard incorporates rich natural elements, with dense vegetation and winding paths that provide a tranquil retreat where readers can escape the noise and reconnect with nature.
The library is not just a space for books—it is a wellspring of inspiration. From a 24-hour self-service library to a children’s picture book area and a digital reading center, it caters to all age groups. For example, the children’s area fosters interactive learning, while the digital center appeals to tech enthusiasts. Open reading areas complement separated quiet zones, meeting the varied needs of readers. The facade design draws inspiration from the geometric patterns of Ming Dynasty bookshelves, blending traditional cultural heritage with modern architectural language. By combining locally sourced stone with glass, the library exudes a sense of historical gravitas while embracing contemporary transparency and lightness. Through its windows, visitors can enjoy views of the courtyard and the cityscape, enriching their reading and exploration experience.
Cultural Center: A Stage for Arts and Humanities
The cultural center revolves around art and interaction, offering a variety of vibrant functions. From a 300-seat concert hall to a 500-seat theater, the center provides a versatile platform for performing arts. The vertical layout of the theater and concert hall frees up ground-level space while directing visitors to elevated viewing terraces. From these terraces, panoramic views of the city skyline unfold, and the stepped design makes it an ideal venue for outdoor events. The central courtyard not only channels natural light deep into the building but also serves as the heart of its artistic spaces. Spiral staircases connect art classrooms and rehearsal rooms across different levels, creating a continuous flow of creativity.
Here, artistic education and cultural exchange intersect, offering visitors endless opportunities for discovery. The rooftop garden at the top level provides employees and visitors with a serene oasis where art and nature coexist in harmony. Inspired by the rhythm of music, the cultural center’s facade features louvered designs that play with light and shadow, giving the structure a dynamic and ethereal quality. At night, soft lighting emanates from within, casting poetic and warm reflections through the louvers, enhancing the riverside ambiance.
