One day, Deputy District Chief Wang Dalong looked in on  his former teacher, Dr. Dan Loong.

“Professor Long, after graduating from undergraduate studies, you were assigned to Zhangjiakou No.2 Middle School. At that time, I was still a primary school pupil. Once you came to my home to ask my mother to do something for you. I had a deep impression of you at that time. Later, during one summer vacation, my mother took me to your home every day to learn English and electronic organ. After I entered university, you offered us an elective course, ‘Business English'. Later, after I graduated, I was admitted to be a civil servant. When you knew that I had succeeded in passing the exam and got the job, you were very happy. You told me many times that those who do not forget the predecessors are the teachers of the later generations. Over these years, I have always remembered your earnest teachings and, therefore, I dedicated myself to work wholeheartedly.”

Dan Loong said with emotion, “Everyone has been young. No gold is completely pure, and no one is perfect. None of us are sages, but we must have at least a minimum requirement for ourselves. My requirements for myself are, firstly, not to harm any others. Secondly, to help others to the best of my ability. As for you, now that you are already a deputy district chief, you must listen to my warning: See that you stay away from corruption.”

“Don't worry. I will strictly abide by the Party's discipline. In fact, for anyone, whether it's for survival or living, one doesn't need too much wealth. Some people are carried away and become complacent, so they have tragic endings. You have proven through a DNA paternity testing that I am not the son of the corrupt official Sang. I am especially grateful to you. By the way, Professor Loong, I have always been unable to figure out why you became a postdoctoral fellow in religious studies after graduating with a Ph.D. in literature.”

“A religion, no matter what kind of religion it is, is a kind of belief. I research religious studies in order to figure out what differences there are among various religions. The reason why human beings are different from animals is that humans have minds, languages, innovation ability, and their own beliefs. Therefore, humans are the most important beings among all ones.”

Wang Dalong asked, “Professor Loong, are believes and philosophies closely related?"

“This is a good question. In ancient society, people had language. With language, primitive religions came into being. There are many kinds of primitive religions all over the world. For example, Bon religion in Tibet, and another one, Shamanism of Mongolians and Manchus. Primitive religions all believe that everything has a spirit, so there are witches performing spiritual dances. With a certain primitive religion, there is mythology, which comes from animism, which I just mentioned. It believes that everything in the world has a soul and is influencing various natural phenomena. Therefore, there are various immortals, demons and monsters in ‘A Journey to the West’. If there were no animism, then our literature would become completely uninteresting. So, primitive religions have produced two rivers. One is theology, which has developed into philosophy, and the other is literature.”

“When you did your postdoctoral religious research in UBC, were the main contents about Western religions?”

“Yes. The Western civilization we are talking about has two sources, known as ‘the Hebraic-Hellenic sources’. One is the religion of ancient Greece, and the other is the religion of ancient Hebrews. Nowadays, Westerners generally believe in Christianity, and the source of this religion is Judaism, which regards Jews as the ‘chosen people’. So, what should people of ethnic groups other than Jews do? Therefore, this problem promoted the emergence of Christianity, which is divided into three major categories: Catholicism, Protestantism, and Eastern Orthodoxy. On the other hand, no matter what ethnic group you belong to, people who believe in Islam are all called Muslims. In the Eastern world, Buddhism was born in Nepal. Our ancestors founded Confucianism and Taoism. In present-day India, Hinduism and Sikhism are quite popular. Well, let's not discuss them one by one. In short and in a word, the reasons for the emergence of religions and theologies were people's fear of natural disasters and death. In the face of the power of nature, people are just insignificant. Therefore, people have awe of nature. With awe, people will reflect on their words and deeds, and thus human behavioral norms come into being. This is the earliest morality and law.”

“I still remember that you told us in class that religion and superstition are two different things. Superstition is ignorance, while religion has its own theoretical system, and theology is also a treasure of civilization.”

“Sadly, many people who claim on the surface to be religious believers are in fact double-dealing people in their actual actions. For example, some politicians in the West are actually refined egoists at heart. For instance, some American politicians seem to be Christians outwardly, but in fact, what they believe in is the law of the jungle, where the strong prey on the weak and the fittest ones survive. Why does the United States start wars all over the world?”

Wang Dalong replied, “The United States creates lots of international tensions and starts wars everywhere in order to check and balance the development momentum of other countries. It can make a huge profit by selling arms, and at the same time, it also restrains the economic development of other countries.”

Dan Loong nodded and said, “Yes. What they say outwardly is one thing, but what they do in secret is another. This is a typical characteristic of Dog-hair-ism. The United States is a typical Dog-hair-ist country.”

Wang Dalong laughed and said, “Those who are doghairists all have such a mentality: what I have obtained, others had better not obtain it. What I cannot obtain, others mustn't be able to obtain it either!”

“You said it.”

“And, in my opinion, this Feng Goumao is just a combination of Ying Bojue in ‘The Plum in the Golden Vase' and Jia Rui in ‘Dreams of the Red Mansions'.”

Dan Loong said, “I am currently conducting researches on Western colonialist culture. Some public intellectuals and big shots claim that we should not believe in the saying, that is, ‘Western powers have an unwavering intention to destroy us'. But, I don't think so. Take the current conflict between North Korea and South Korea. What is North Korea most afraid of South Korea doing? That is, using drones to distribute leaflets to North Korea! Is this what young people call PUA? When I was an undergraduate, I majored in English language and literature. In the classmate group on WeChat, I found that some of my classmates have changed lot now. They have begun to oppose the Party and are no longer patriotic from the bottom of their hearts. This is the direct effect of PUA. When the Wenchuan earthquake occurred and floods occurred in the south, these former college classmates are now even applauding and jeering. In my opinion, this is a kind of mental illness and a typical symptom of paranoia."

Wang Dalong said, “Paranoia is a serious mental disorder, mainly manifested as a mental state characterized by systematic delusions. The patients will have persistent, fixed and relatively systematic delusional ideas. For example, the patients may firmly believe that they are being followed, monitored or persecuted; or they may think that they have extraordinary talents, wealth and power; one may also unjustly suspect that his spouse is unfaithful and having an affair. Although these delusions lack objective factual basis, the patients firmly believe in themselves subjectively, and it is difficult for anyone to change their ideas through rational explanations and evidence.”

Dan Loong said, “The symptoms you just mentioned are relatively common. The delusional contents of those classmates I mentioned are that all the educational contents I received in the past are untrue, and we were deceived by those textbooks on campus. These classmates of mine who suffered from paranoia usually might spend 24 hours a day, except for eating and sleeping, collecting and forwarding all kinds of rumors every minute and every second. This is just like some unfounded suspicion of one's spouse's infidelity. It is difficult to reason with them. I feel sad for these unreasonable classmates because their physical and mental health has been adversely affected for a long time and continuously. They even suffer from long-term insomnia because of this, and there is always a voice calling in their minds.”

Wang Dalong said, “Professor Loong, you are right. The behavioral and emotional manifestations of such patients are mostly continuous anxiety and anger. They will repeatedly check the surrounding environment and will concentrate on collecting so-called ‘evidence’. They may even track or attack the suspected object.”

Dan Loong stated, “People like this have the same characteristics in terms of personality. For example, when they were young, they were stubborn, sensitive, suspicious, and self-centered. People with these personality traits, alas, have been in a tense rhythm of life, for a long time, due to their careers so as to be under great psychological pressure. Once they fall ill and become paranoid, it is very difficult to cure. Because this disease is neither schizophrenia nor an organic mental disorder. Some patients will develop severe depression, and some may even commit suicide.”

Van Gogh died by suicide, right?”
