About the area:

Panshan Mountain

The natural scenery of Mt. Panshan is covered in rocks, streams, pine trees and vast greenness. Green slopes are famed for their jade pines and rock formations shaped into fantastic shapes by centuries of wind and water. More than 320 kinds of trees and shrubs have been found in the vicinity, these trees make the mountain a natural botanical garden. The Mt. Panshan itself has many sheer and attractive precipices and grotesquely shaped rocks and boulders. The mountain consists of five peaks. Its main peak Moon Hanging Peak (Guayue feng), although only 864-meters above sea level, rises sharply. It is claimed that the peak of the mountain commands a view of the Great Wall on the west and Mount Tai on the east. This highest peak also has, situated on its summit, the Dingguang Stupa that is alleged to contain a tooth of Buddha.

Just like other famous mountains in China, the quiet Mt. Panshan is also inhabited by monks. They have been through their fair share of historical troubles and strife: in World War II the Japanese came through this area successfully burning its 70 temples. Today 72 temples of all sizes and Buddhism schools can be found here, both restored and new. The temples still boast many rich cultural relics.

A lot of the climb involves pushing your way past other tourists as you pass many recently man-made temples and pavilions. The higher you climb, the more natural it becomes and the better your experience becomes. The views from the higher points of the mountain are the highlights.

Features of Mt. Panshan

【Religion】
Religion culture is an important part of Panshan Mountain. Historically speaking, Buddhism and Taoism winded alternately in the development. And they competed with each other for hegemony. In Eastern Han Dynasty, Buddhism began to spread in Jixian County. The first Buddhist temple - Xianglin Temple was built at the foot of Yushan Hill by the eastern side of Mt Panshan. In the Tang Dynasty, the temples was continuously built in this place, including Yunzhao Temple, Wansong Temple, Tiancheng Temple, Tianxiang Temple, Qianxiang Temple, Ganhua Temple, etc. when it comes to Ming and Qing dynasty, the number of temples in this area had reached to 72.

【Culture】
Due to the wonders of the mountain, it attracted many emperors of different dynasties for excursions, including Emperor Taizhong in Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong in Liao Dynasty, Emperor Kangxi and Qianlong in Qing Dynasty. They came here for vocation and burned incense to pray for peace of the country. They also left many great poems here.

Dule Temple

Dule Temple located on the West Street of the Ji County of Tianjin City, built in the Tang Dynasty and dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, was had more than 1000 remaining years of life histories, is one of China's most ancient wood constructions.

Inside the temple the 23-meter-high Temple of Goddess of Mercy represents the highest double-story wooden temple in China and also it's oldest. The statue of the Goddess of Mercy that adorns the temple is 16 meters high with ten small head portraits, making it one of the largest and most spectacular color clay sculptures in China. All the walls of the temple are intricately detailed with murals depicting important Buddhist icons, entering this temple really is an overwhelming sensation with a kaleidoscope of color and art as well as a window of learning about Buddhism.

Huangyaguan Great Wall

Huangyaguan Great Wall is considered to be a miniature of the Great Wall of China. In this section, you can find the stone base built in the Northern Qi Dynasty (550 - 557) and the brick battlements laid in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). Watchtowers there are either solid or hollow, and have different shapes, including round ones and square ones. Outside, you may see independent outposts a few meters away from each other; inside, there are also ramparts to reinforce the defense system.

Basic Facts of Huangyaguan Great Wall

Huangyaguan Pass was first built during the Northern Qi Dynasty and repaired extensively during the Ming Dynasty under the supervision of Qi Jiguang, a renowned general of that time.

Stretching 42 kilometers (26 miles) from the General Pass in Beijing to Malan Pass in Hebei, there used to be 52 watchtowers and 14 beacon towers in total. However, most of this part of the wall has collapsed due to lack of renovation. Starting from 1984, people spent three years repairing 3,025 meters (3,308 yards) of the wall and 20 watchtowers.

Because the cliff rocks to the east of the pass are mostly yellow and they look gilded at the sunset, the pass got its name Huangya (Yellow Cliff) Pass.

The Pass of Huangyaguan

Surrounded by abrupt mountains, Huangya Pass is one of the most important passes with barbicans, turrets, emplacements, barracks and other indispensable military facilities orderly arranged. Within the pass, more than 40 crisscrossing streets form the shape of the Eight Diagram, which gives the pass a nickname, Eight Diagram Fortification City. In the center of the Eight Diagram Street block is the Huangyaguan Great Wall Museum, which used to be the Dispatcher's Office in the Ming Dynasty. Here, you can have a look of the weapons and daily necessities used by soldiers of the Ming Dynasty. Besides the constructional sites, you can also feel the cultural atmosphere by viewing poems inscribed in the Stele Forests and couplets carved on the bamboo strips in the Couplet Hall.
