Introduction:

After the First Opium War, Shanghai began to open up to the world, attracting the British who established their consulate in this region. The Bund, home to some of the oldest buildings, served as the starting point for the modernization of Shanghai. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, this area flourished with a concentration of educated individuals, consulates, churches, museums, press outlets, banks, high-class apartments, and foreign firms. It played a pivotal role in shaping Shanghai's political landscape, fostering Western cultural influences, and driving commercial development, thus becoming the cradle of the city's political, cultural, and commercial transformations.

Former headquarters of the

National Industrial Bank of China

The former headquarters of the National Industrial Bank of China in Shanghai, located on East Beijing road, was constructed in 1929. The building was designed by Atkinson Dallas Civil Engineers & Architects Ltd. and features a reinforced concrete structure with a neoclassical architectural style.

The North China Branch of

the Royal Asiatic Society

The North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, completed in 1932, was designed by Palmer & Turner, Architects and Surveyors. The building showcases an art deco style with Chinese details and motifs, accentuating its masonry structure.

China Baptist Publication Building

The China Baptist Publication Building, designed by Ladislaus Hudec and completed in 1930, features a reinforced concrete structure. It combines expressionist and Art Deco styles, with a facade adorned by vertical lines.

The Christian Literature Society Building, also designed by Ladislaus Hudec, was constructed in 1933. It boasts a reinforced concrete structure and showcases an Art Deco architectural style.

Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre, completed in 1928 and designed by C.H. Gonda, showcases a reinforced concrete structure. It embodies the elegant Art Deco architectural style. Shanghai Confucian Temple complex is a splendid architectural marvel, featuring elaborately designed pagodas, small bridges, flowing water, and lush greenery that give it the ambiance of a unique Jiangnan garden. It was also known as the school palace, serving as the highest learning institution in ancient Shanghai.

The Rowing club

Constructed in 1905, the Rowing Club encompassed three distinct sections, including a swimming pool, club area, and boathouse.

Y.M.C.A. of China Building

The Y.M.C.A. of China Building was constructed between 1919 and 1924, featuring a brick-and-concrete composite structure. The building includes modern courtyard apartments and a notable colonnade at the entrance. The facilities inside adhere to the standards for apartment buildings in the U.S., providing amenities such as tap water, electricity, gas, and sanitary equipment.

Lyceum Building

Lyceum Building, finalized in 1927, boasts a reinforced concrete structure. Its name traces back to the early settlers who established the Amateur Dramatic Club in 1866. The club derived its name from the Greek word "Lukeion," which was inspired by Aristotle's renowned school of philosophy and science in Athens.

National YWCA Building

The National YWCA Building, completed in 1933 and designed by 李锦沛, showcases a reinforced concrete structure. The architectural design draws influence from the Art Deco style, fused with traditional Chinese features.

Former British Consulate

The Former British Consulate, designed by Grossman and Boyce, was finalized in 1872. This two-story masonry building features a timber hip roof and follows an H-shaped plan. It exhibits the architectural style of the English Renaissance. The Residence of the Consul, completed in 1884, shares a similar architectural style to that of the British Consulate.
