Dear students,

I understand that the current situation regarding Coronavirus (Covid-19) is very concerning for you and a number of you are wishing to return home to China as soon as possible. I wanted to let you know that this is not a problem as far as the School and University are concerned. Please feel free to return to China if that is what you feel you need to do. You will not be penalised for not attending any scheduled sessions and the School will make sure your Visa status is not compromised. Please just let your programme leader know as soon as possible that you are planning to return home.

The University of Plymouth and the School of Art, Design and Architecture are currently not planning to shut down due to the current situation, but will close if we are required to do so by Public Health England. We currently have no indication that this will happen soon and it may not be required at all. We have made plans to move as much of our teaching and assessment online for the remainder of the year. This means that if you do decide to return to China we will still be able to support your studies through virtual tutorials, online learning materials and digital assessments. Your lecturers will be able to provide you with more detailed information of how this will be happening. This situation is unprecedented so this transition may be a little bumpy as we move from planned face to face sessions to online and we apologise in advance for any issues this may cause.

We understand that when you return home, some of you will not have access to the same technical facilities and support as you currently do and we are investigating if, and how, we could take that into account at your assessment. We will share more details of this once information becomes available. For now, the message is if you want to leave, please do so knowing that we are trying to ensure that you will not be disadvantaged when it comes to your assessment.

Finally, thank you very much for your ongoing patience. I know this is an intensely difficult time for everyone, but particularly for you and your families with you being so far from home. There is a lot to take in here, but the key messages are:

  • If you feel that you need to leave, please do and go knowing the School is here to support you.

  • Your learning will move online gradually in order to support you not being on campus.

  • You will be able to complete your assessments remotely, you will not need to come back to campus.

  • We shall ensure that you are treated fairly when it comes to assessment and progress.

If you have any questions please contact your Programme Leader.

I wish you all the best for the remainder of your studies.

Kind regards

Chris
