How does showering too much backfire on skin health?

Although showering must be included in the daily routine without fail, there are some people who continue to shower multiple times a day overlooking the risks – more so during the coronavirus pandemic when cleanliness was a priority for all. However, showering too much can rob the skin of its natural oils, cause dryness and disturb the good bacteria balance.

During winter, when your skin already experiences dryness, showering too often can further add to the woes – yet, there is a way out of this situation, and it is using colder water for the purpose.

Can this be an excuse for not showering regularly?

On one hand, while showering too much can result in dryness and trigger other negative effects on skin health, experts say that it is still no reason to not take a bath regularly. Leaving a gap of over three to four days between showers can up risk of bacterial infections, fungal infections and patches of scaly skin. These dark patches can contain dirt, sweat, dead skin cells that trigger acne or worsen conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

How often and for how long should one shower?

According to a New York-based dermatologist, the amount of workouts determines how often a person should shower. To avoid the risk of irritation, acne, and skin condition flare-ups, those that work out more should shower more frequently.

Although there is no ideal duration for a bath, experts recommend a shower lasting three to four minutes focusing on groins and armpits – that should suffice.
