This December, Burst City, Trash-A-Go-Go and Specters is hosting legendary punk rock band T.S.O.L. to China for the very first time! As a pivotal act at the cross section of West Coast punk, deathrock, and metal, this is a unique chance to catch one of the most unique and influential bands in rock at a close-up, in your face club show. SoCal’s T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty) burst onto the scene in the late ’70s and quickly became a pillar of the American hardcore punk scene. Playing around California with contemporaries like the Damned and the Dead Kennedys, they managed to write enough material to finally release a full length record. A brief visit to the studio resulted in the classic Dance with Me (1981), a phenomenal horror / deathrock punk record that initiated the new gothic sound along with bands like Misfits, Christian Death, and the Lords of the New Church. Fans were mildly confused, but the band garnered rave reviews and was featured in director Penelope Spheeris' Suburbia documentary as a result.

This new lineup released three albums on Enigma Records, continuing in a more polished post-punk direction before embracing hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal in the late ‘80s.

True Sounds Reunite

Introductions for Guest BandsThe experimental, sometimes-sax-wielding, freak punk outfit have accrued a loud and controversial name for themselves since forming in 2012. The Shanghai based group has as of late been a crucial force in bridging a wide gap between the eastern and western hemispheres of DIY punk rock. Along with blazing a trail all over the globe they’ve played host to visiting western punks and some legends as well sharing stages with acts such as Zero Boys, Descendents, MDC, Verbal Abuse, Mike Watt + The Missingmen, D.O.A., Ceremony, Iceage, and eastern notables such as P.K.14, SMZB, and Hang on the Box. During a mainland tour of China with UK punk legends The Boys, they were forced to literally move the tour underground after being banned by the Ministry of Culture for lewd artwork on a tour poster.VICE magazine documented one of their ‘bunker’ gigs in Beijing in glorious baijiufilled detail. They've won numerous awards and have released several acclaimed music videos: “Suntan” starring famed Chinese actress Wang Lin (Xue Yi), best known for her role in the Chinese soap opera Romance in the Rain and appearances in Academy Award winning Ang Lee films such as Lust / Caution), the politically and critically charged nightmare “Billy” and “Sifter” which was entirely filmed in Pyongyang North Kore making it the very first punk video ever filmed in the DPRK.They’ve played numerous festivals around the world and honed their unconventional blend of 50s R&B, Free Jazz and Punk with a critically acclaimed EP Full Circle on Ripping Records which featured Greg Ginn (Black Flag), LP Round Eye which featured Steve Mackay (Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Violent Femmes) & Lo-fi legend R. Stevie Moore, LP Monstervision, on Joey Shithead of DOA’s Vancouver-based Sudden Death Records produced by Yang Haisong of PK14 and featured horror movie host icon Joe Bob Briggs as narrator and LP “Culture Shock Treatment” produced by Mike Watt (Minutemen), mixed by Bill Stevenson (Black Flag / Descendents / ALL) and released by Vincent Fiorello (Less Than Jake)‘s Paper and Plastick Records.They have drawn comparisons to the Stooges, Captain Beefheart, Dr. Feelgood and The Fall but have more often fallen into a category all their own.The Molds

In 2006, driven by a love for primal rock and garage rock, Liu Ge formed The Molds. From 2007 to 2009, The Molds made their mark in the Beijing music scene, led by the iconic D22. Centered around vocalist and guitarist Liu Ge, the current lineup includes guitarist Vicious Puppy, bassist Zhang Shengyuan, and drummer Zhang Qian. After years of development, the band released their debut album, Born Astride The Grave, in September 2018. In 2020, they followed up with the EP L'ULTIMO SALOON DEL WEST, featuring four tracks imagined as a Western film soundtrack. The Molds have maintained a reclusive presence in the music world, "neither mainstream nor alternative," often pausing their creations due to twists of fate.-------------------------Tina Turnatrick
