ICVS Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program - Humanely & Effectively Managing Stray Cats
The German Embassy School of Beijing had a cat problem. A momma cat had given birth to several kittens on the grounds of the school. As the kittens were now about 4-5 months of age and reaching reproductive age, the facilities coordinator of the German Embassy School reached out to ICVS to learn what they could do to manage their cat colony and prevent even more cats and kittens.
The International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) provided a FREE Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) training and certification workshop at the Germany Embassy School. As a certified TNR practitioner, the facilities coordinator was able to borrow humane cat traps for FREE from the ICVS trap bank and bring the trapped cats to ICVS for legal rabies and feline distemper vaccinations, parasite prevention and spay/neuter surgeries.
The momma cat and 3 kittens were trapped, spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated and then returned. Each cat was ear-tipped and also received an abodominal tattoo to identify the cat as having been sterilized.
ICVS TNR workshops and humane animal welfare programs are recognized and endorsed by the Humane Society of the United States, the Humane Society International, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the ASPCA and the Jane Goodall Institute. ICVS has helped volunteers implement TNR programs at the Embassy of New Zealand, the Embassy of the United States of America, the Embassy of Austria, the Embassy of the Netherlands and the Delegation of the European Union to China. ICVS has helped students from the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) successfully conduct TNR projects on its campus over the years to control the feral and stray cat population. ICVS trains student Roots & Shoots groups, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, international and local students and private citizens working to control the stray cat populations in Beijing, Tianjin and many provinces throughout China!
