A total of 35 people were killed and another 43 injured after a car rammed into people in a sports center in the city of Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong Province, on Monday, the city's public security bureau said Tuesday.
The incident took place around 7:48 p.m. Monday, when citizens were exercising at the sports center.
The 62-year-old driver, a divorced man surnamed Fan, was controlled soon after the ramming, the bureau said.
Fan forced his way into the sports center, hitting people on an internal road before trying to escape. Officers found him in the vehicle, where he had attempted to harm himself with a knife. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and is currently unable to speak with investigators, Zhuhai police said.
Initial findings suggest Fan was motivated by frustration over a property division dispute following his divorce. He now faces charges for endangering public safety, and investigations and rescue efforts are ongoing.
