How to make a compass in an emergency
"The relentless sun hammered down on the sea of sand, each grain shimmering like shards of glass under the searing heat. A lone figure trudged forward, his shadow a thin, wavering line against the undulating dunes. Every breath burned in his throat, dry and rasping, as if the air itself was stripped of any trace of moisture. He couldn’t remember how long he’d been walking—hours, days, a lifetime. It was as if time had dissolved in the haze of heat and exhaustion.
He paused at the crest of a dune, squinting against the blinding glare that radiated off the endless expanse. Nothing but more sand, stretching to the horizon in every direction. His lips, cracked and bleeding, moved silently as he counted the dwindling swigs of water left in his canteen. The thought of it—a few precious drops—made him ache with a desperation that tightened around his chest like a vice.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. He had a map, supplies, a clear destination. But the desert had swallowed it all, unraveling his sense of direction until he was left adrift in this merciless wasteland. Now, as the sun blazed overhead, he felt its weight pressing him down, whispering the same question over and over:
How much further until there’s nothing left of you? Which way is north??"
What to do??
Dig a stick into the ground and place a stone on the tip of where the shadow falls.
Wait 15 minutes and the place another stone on where the tip of the shadow is.Draw a line between each stone; this line runs from east to west!
Stand with your left toe touching the second stone and your right foot touching the first stone. You are now facing north. You have made a compass and you can use this to help your survive!
Try this next time you are in the middle of nowhere...it really works!
