Nestled in the serene farming village of Shees, United Arab Emirates, the Shees Friday Market by Shape Architecture Practice + Research seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. This innovative project, completed in 2023, reimagines the traditional souk for the 21st century, creating a vibrant community hub that celebrates local culture and sustainable design.
The market's most striking feature is its open layout, which blurs the boundaries between shops and walkways. This fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces encourages free movement and social interaction, evoking the atmosphere of a traditional marketplace while catering to contemporary needs.
Situated between a new speedway and the majestic Hajjar mountains, the market's design responds sensitively to its surroundings. The architecture incorporates local materials, including stones sourced from nearby tunneling works, grounding the project in its context. The stepped roofs and stone-clad walls create a visual dialogue with the mountainous landscape, while generous overhangs provide shade and reduce energy consumption.
Sustainability is woven throughout the project, from its rainwater management system to its use of natural light and ventilation. Each shop features two glazed walls and sliding glass doors, allowing for flexibility and connection to the outdoors.
