A Memorable Summer at Fudan University
As the well-known Chinese adage goes, "It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books." Fudan–DePaul Chinese Language and Culture Immersion Summer Program was designed with this very philosophy in mind, aiming to offer exchange students not only systematic language instruction but also cultural immersion.
Hosted by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Fudan University, the program brought together 11 students from various universities across the United States for seven weeks in Shanghai. Over the course of the summer, these students enhanced their Chinese language skills while deepening their understanding of Chinese culture.
In the final week of the program, students were invited to present their experiences in Chinese, reflecting on their time at Fudan and in Shanghai. Through these presentations, they shared personal stories of discovery, adventure, and appreciation. Their anecdotes ranged from navigating the bustling streets of Shanghai and enjoying the local cuisine to overcoming challenges like the summer heat and experiencing delightful surprises such as trying their hand at Chinese calligraphy, singing karaoke, or practicing traditional Chinese martial arts for the first time.
The presentations not only highlighted their progress toward their language goals but also captured the excitement of encountering these new experiences for the first time. More importantly, they revealed the deeper connections the students made with China, its people, culture, and heritage. We hope that these memories and experiences will stay with them long after the summer has come to an end.
Here are summaries of the presentations made by some of the participating students—let’s hear more about their unique experiences at Fudan!
Exchange Student Reflections
“Fudan University is a truly special place. Not many Americans get the chance to come to China, meet its people, and learn Chinese because it can be quite costly. Chinese culture is so unique, and I really hope I can return soon.”
In his presentation, Spencer reflected on his journey from the USA to Shanghai, recalling his first impressions of his new dormitory. He was pleasantly surprised by its comfort and proximity to his classes, which made his daily routine much easier. However, one element of his stay that left a lasting impression was the intense summer heat in Shanghai. With temperatures soaring above 35 degrees Celsius on some days, Spencer found himself somehow reluctant to leave the comfort of his air-conditioned room. But the excitement of new experiences in Shanghai soon pulled him out of his comfort zone.
Armed with a shared bike, Spencer explored both the Fudan University campus and the city beyond, taking in a variety of activities and sights. Mornings for the exchange students were dedicated to language studies, with classes aimed at improving their spoken Chinese and preparing them for the HSK exam. In the afternoons and evenings, Spencer fully immersed himself in Shanghai’s vibrant culture. He met regularly with his language exchange partner, explored the Wujiaochang neighborhood near campus with its lively malls and restaurants, and even found time to enjoy the arcade dance machines at Heshenghui International Plaza.
“I love going to restaurants off-campus with my friends. Our dorm is really close to Wujiaochang; it’s only three stops away by bus. Even though the food at Fudan’s canteens is really good, it still can’t beat the restaurants at Wujiaochang.
After dinner, I sometimes like to go to Heshenghui shopping center, because they have a dancing arcade game there. Dancing helps me relieve the stress from studying, and it’s a lot of fun!”
Spencer’s summer at Fudan was a blend of academic progress and cultural discovery, proving that even in the sweltering heat, Shanghai’s charm is irresistible.
“Before coming to China, I had never been to karaoke. I’m not usually the type to sing in front of others, but I spontaneously decided to go out with friends and give it a try. Who knew singing could be so much fun? I think I lost my voice a few times over the weeks... but I had such a great time!”
One of the highlights of Vanessa's time at Fudan was discovering that her dorm room offered a view of the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower. Waking up to this stunning sight every morning was a pleasant surprise that made her summer in Shanghai even more memorable.
During her time in Shanghai, Vanessa tried many things for the first time. She enjoyed local Shanghai cuisine, visited the historic Yu Garden, and learned traditional Chinese calligraphy and ink painting. Along with her classmates, she even crafted coasters using a traditional straw weaving technique. Vanessa was pleased to discover that affordable massage parlors were conveniently located near the campus, providing her with the perfect opportunity to unwind and relax after busy days of exploration.
In her presentation, Vanessa spoke about her experience taking the HSK Chinese language proficiency exam. She shared, "I was really nervous because I wanted to do well, and I wasn’t expecting so many people to be taking the test! I think I did pretty well, but the listening section was definitely a challenge. Still, I’m proud of myself for taking the exam!”
Vanessa’s presentation was rich in detail, offering a vivid glimpse into her personal journey and deepening connection with Chinese culture. Whether it was through the food she tasted or the places she explored, her presentation reflected a genuine appreciation of her time in China and her bright, adventurous spirit.
“We visited Shanghai Jingju Opera Museum museum, and I especially loved wearing traditional Chinese clothing. I think the costumes used in Peking Opera are stunning, with beautiful patterns. A teacher showed us the facial expressions and vocal techniques used in Peking Opera performances. I didn’t quite understand the vocal aspects, but I really enjoyed the photos we took!”
One of the highlights of Mandy’s time in Shanghai was the celebration of two birthdays together with her new friends: Matthew's and her own. On Matthew’s birthday, the group enjoyed a delightful meal at the famous hot pot restaurant Haidilao, followed by an entertaining evening of karaoke. For Mandy’s birthday, they chose a Japanese restaurant where they had sushi and soba noodles. This memorable occasion filled Mandy with gratitude as she celebrated in the lively atmosphere of Shanghai alongside her new friends.
Another memorable experience for Mandy was her visit to the Shanghai Peking Opera Museum. She was captivated by the beauty of the costumes worn by Chinese opera singers and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to try them on, further strengthening her appreciation for this traditional art form.
Mandy shared a touching moment with her classmates as they came together to make dumplings. Having made dumplings at home before, this communal activity reminded her of home and created a sense of warmth and friendship among the group.
Mandy also had the opportunity to explore other cities, including Nanjing, Kaifeng, and Huangshan, broadening her understanding of China’s rich culture and history. Each journey has contributed to an enriching experience during her time in China.
"We went to Shanghai University of Sport, where we visited a martial arts museum. I really enjoyed it because I think practicing martial arts is a great exercise."
Jacob found the hands-on cultural experiences to be the most precious part of the program. Organized excursions provided the students with a direct immersion into the country’s traditional arts and heritage, allowing Jacob to explore different aspects of Chinese culture in an interactive way. A standout moment for him was a visit to the Chinese Wushu Museum at the Shanghai Institute of Physical Education, dedicated to traditional Chinese martial arts. Here, he not only learned about the history of Wushu but also had the chance to practice it himself. This unique experience left him inspired to possibly continue martial arts training in the future as a way to stay active.
In a calligraphy class, Jacob learned to write the character for “dragon” (龙, lóng), representing his Chinese zodiac sign, using various calligraphic styles. He also enjoyed a visit to the Peking Opera Museum. Trying on the vibrant costumes of Peking Opera performers gave him a glimpse into the enchanting world of Chinese performing arts. These experiences brought China’s cultural heritage to life in a way that resonated deeply with Jacob, leaving him with lasting memories and a greater appreciation for the country’s artistic traditions.
"In our first week, we visited Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town, a beautiful tourist spot in Shanghai. I had such a great time exploring it! There were tons of shops and cafes, and we had a wonderful time there together as a class."
Matthew enthusiastically shared his study abroad experience, beginning with how much he enjoyed the lively atmosphere of Wujiaochang. This neighborhood, conveniently close to campus, quickly became a highlight of his time in Shanghai. To him, Wujiaochang was more than just a functional space; its aesthetically lit streets and vibrant night views left a lasting impression on him and it brought an unexpected beauty to his everyday life in the city. He was also delighted to stumble upon a Goose Island Brewery on University Road—a familiar brand from his hometown of Chicago. He eagerly shared this news with his family, as it felt like a small piece of home in Shanghai.
Beyond campus, Matthew also embraced the chance to explore other cities and towns around Shanghai along with his classmates. Memorable visits to Nanjing’s historic Fuzimiao, the scenic hiking route of Huangshan, and the cozy and charming atmosphere of Hongcun village all left him with a deep impression. Yet, one of his most memorable experiences came from a visit to his Chinese teacher’s home. He was struck by the strong sense of community in this large apartment complex, where neighbors knew each other and created a warm, close-knit atmosphere—something he found rare in the U.S.
"In China, I tried a lot of new foods for the first time, like candied hawthorn sticks (糖葫芦, tánghúlu), and yellow watermelon. If we had those in the U.S., I think they would be really popular too!"
Like her classmates, Amber reflected on the wonderful experiences she had during her stay in China, ranging from refreshing everyday moments to meaningful and long-lasting memories. Some of her favorite moments included singing karaoke with classmates, visiting the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, trying the famous Chinese street snack tanghulu, and coincidentally discovering a traditional calligraphy and painting shop where she watched an artist paint her favorite animal, the tiger. Even small encounters, like getting a massage and chatting with the masseuses in Chinese, added to her appreciation of daily life in China.
Amber also enjoyed the joy of shopping in China, sharing her excitement over unique finds like a capybara plushie, a trilingual Chinese-English-French edition of The Little Prince, numerous postcards, and fabric she plans to use for sewing new clothes. She quickly became a fan of Taobao, which offered convenience and seemingly endless options.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all eleven students who participated in this program and shared their remarkable reflections through engaging presentations. Each one brought unique insights and experiences, capturing the spirit of discovery and cultural connection that defined their summer at Fudan. We wish them the very best in their continued Chinese language journeys and hope that our paths may cross again in the future.
