Most recently, LSGI co-organized the 2023 International Symposium on Atmospheric Sounding and Data Assimilation (ISASDA) with the partners China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) and Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Xuzhou, Mainland China during 6-9 December 2023. This symposium is co-chaired by Prof. Kefei Zhang from the CUMT and Prof. George Zhizhao Liu from the LSGI, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
With a cross-disciplinary theme, more than 200 scientists, researchers, and professionals from the Mainland China and Hong Kong as well as the United States, Russia, Germany, Japan, Australia, Poland, Egypt, Nepal, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan were attracted to this unique symposium. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first of its kind to organize such a symposium specifically to synthesize GPS/Beidou-based and remote sensing-based atmospheric sounding techniques with data assimilation.
With the development of GPS/Beidou and remote sensing technologies, more and more opportunities are available for atmospheric observations, which provide valuable input data for modern weather forecasting system through data assimilation into advanced Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. The assimilation of observation data is a crucially important procedure in modern NWP in order to enhance the reliability and performance of weather forecasting.
Prof. George Zhizhao Liu and his Micro-Laboratory of Atmospheric Research and Geomatics Engineering (Micro-LARGE) are international pioneers in synthesizing GPS/Beidou and remote sensing technologies and their applications in NWP. Their advanced algorithms have significantly improved the accuracy of remote sensing satellite-observed atmospheric water vapor data, a crucially important type of input data for NWP and weather forecasting. The Micro-LARGE Lab led by Prof. Liu is claimed to be the world’s 2nd agency to assimilate Near-Infrared (NIR) satellite water vapor into NWP, after the U.K. Met Office which is the world’s first one to operationally assimilate satellite NIR water vapor data into its global NWP since May 2022.
