Air China Ltd. and China Southern Airlines Co. Ltd. received their first C919 passenger jets Wednesday, state media reported, as deliveries of the homegrown aircraft touted as a rival to Boeing’s 737 and Airbus’ 320 accelerate.

中国国航、南方航空首架C919国产大飞机同日入列。8月28日,中国商用飞机有限责任公司(下称“中国商飞”)在其浦东基地交付第八、九架客机。至此,C919用户名单集齐国有“三大航”。


The two airliners are part of a $20.7 billion order the carriers announced in April for 200 C919s from Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China Ltd. (Comac). The deliveries would take the total number of airlines flying the C919 to three, including China Eastern Airlines Corp. Ltd. . The state-owned trio, often referred to as China’s “Big Three,” have in total signed up for over 300 C919 jets.


Air China’s first C919 is equipped with 158 seats — eight in business class and 150 in economy class, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. China Southern Airlines’ C919 will feature business, premium economy and economy classes, totaling 164 seats, the report said.

The carriers have to conduct extra operational qualifications before putting the narrow-body jets into commercial operation, Caixin has learned.

国航、南航接收的首架机略有不同。中国商飞表示,国航C919首架机为延程型,采用158座两舱布局,包含8个公务舱及150个经济舱。南航C919首架机为标准航程型,采用164座三舱布局,包含8个公务舱、18个明珠经济舱及138个经济舱。接收飞机后,国航、南航均需对其补充运行合格审定方能投入商业运营。


The deliveries come as Comac, seeking to become an alternative to Boeing Co. and Airbus SE, is vying for a greater share of the global commercial jet market by first starting to ink deals domestically. Its C919 plane currently isn’t certified by any air safety regulators outside of China and therefore can only fly locally.

此外,据财新了解,C919仍未获得欧美适航证。欧美相关机构此前曾与我国民航局商讨过互认协议,但目前仍未落实。


Comac has been ramping up deliveries of the C919. Since December 2022, nine C919 jets have been delivered, six of them this year, state media reported. Late last month, China Eastern Airlines added the seventh C919 to its fleet.

During a Caixin visit to Comac’s facility in Shanghai on Wednesday, six C919s were shown to be undergoing final assembly, at least two of which are expected to be delivered to China Eastern Airlines and Air China.

财新在现场看到,总装车间内仍有6架飞机正在进行总装,其中已有2架完成涂装,从标志来看,这两架C919预计之后将交付给东航和国航。


HNA Group Co. Ltd.-backed Suparna Airlines expects to take delivery of its first C919 in the fourth quarter of this year, making it the first private carrier scheduled to operate the model, according to an HNA statement published last month. Suparna Airlines is also considering an all-C919 fleet to replace its current all-Boeing fleet.

To keep up with the rise in orders, Comac is working to increase production. A Comac employee told Caixin that the company’s second production base in Shanghai is expected to be completed and put into operation next year, by which time Comac’s C919 annual production will increase from the current 10 aircraft.

One problem Comac faces is its reliance on core components from Europe and the U.S., making it vulnerable to geopolitical tensions. The global aviation industry is also suffering from a component shortage post-pandemic, casting a shadow over Comac’s production plan.

However, the Comac employee expected the short-term impact of the supply chain crisis to be small. Currently, international parts suppliers are still delivering on time and Comac has prepared enough components to produce C919s for one year, the employee said.

目前,C919国产化率约为60%。商飞的Leap发动机由CFM国际发动机公司提供,CFM是法国赛峰和美国通用电气合资成立的公司。在疫情后全球飞机制造链紧张的背景下,前述中国商飞人士表示,商飞目前一次性会备10架C919的零部件,而交货上国际供商仍比较及时,并不担心。
