吴宓辞研究院主任之职，情形颇为复杂，但总体而言是清华的吴宓一派与教务长张彭春意见不合，相互倾轧导致的。The circumstances surrounding Wu Mi's resignation are quite complex, but overall, it was due to disagreements between the Wu Mi faction at Tsinghua and the academic dean Zhang Pengchun, leading to mutual undermining.

为此，吴觉得自己“空疏虚浮，毫无预备，殊自愧惭。张仲述结束之词，颇含讥讪之意。宓深自悲苦。缘宓近兼理事务，大妨读书作文，学问日荒，实为大忧。即无外界之刺激，亦决当努力用功为学。勉之勉之。勿忘此日之苦痛也”。As a result, Wu Mi felt "empty and superficial, unprepared, and felt ashamed. 言辞中见出吴宓的书生本色，也透出他处境的尴尬与内心的痛苦。His words reveal Wu Mi's scholarly nature and also show his awkward situation and inner pain.
1926年1月19日，在校长曹云祥主持下，清华学校校务会议举行临时会议讨论研究院事务。On January 19, 1926, under the chairmanship of Principal Cao Yunxiang, a temporary meeting of the school affairs committee of Tsinghua School was held to discuss the affairs of the Research Institute.
张彭春和赵元任，李济主张研究院只任专门研究，不容纳普通国学。赵元任同时主张“研究院为大学院，先办国学，久后乃设科学”等等。Zhang Pengchun, Zhao Yuanren, and Li Ji advocated that the Research Institute should only engage in specialized research and not admit ordinary Chinese classics studies. Meanwhile, Zhao Yuanren also advocated that "the Research Institute is a graduate school. First, Chinese classics should be studied, and later, science should be set up" and so on.
吴宓在梁启超的支持下，异议力争，王国维初无意见，后亦附张，校务会议最终否定了吴宓意见。With the support of Liang Qichao, Wu Mi strongly disagreed, and Wang Guowei initially had no opinion, but later also supported Zhang. The executive committee ultimately rejected Wu Mi's opinion.
研究院同学会代表全体师生为此发表了《宣言》，以“破坏研究院”等语句，对张彭春等给予指责，同时指责吴宓保护研究院不力，在全校师生中引起震动。The research institute's student union, on behalf of all teachers and students, issued a "Declaration," accusing Zhang Pengchun and others of "destroying the research institute," and also accused Wu Mi of failing to protect the research institute, causing a shock among the whole school.
在双方的挤压下，心情焦虑的吴宓被迫表示提出辞职。这个时候，吴、张两个派系的矛盾已发展到不可调和的余地，其情势不是鱼死就是网破，绝无缓和并肩共事之可能。Under the pressure of both sides, the anxious Wu Mi was forced to express his resignation. 就吴宓的性情言，在学术教育界中，算不上一个热衷于派系争斗的人，只是被偶然卷入了这个圈子，所谓人在江湖，身不由已。但吴毕竟不是个糊涂人，得胜之际，也心生惴惴，自起反思。Speaking of Wu Mi's temperament, in the academic and educational community, he is not a person who is keen on factional struggles. 此时的吴宓不但无法从这群乱的纠葛中抽身，且事态的发展已非他能预料，他虽有悯人之心，而人不我悯，不久即轮到了他的大尴尬、大狼狈。At this time, Wu Mi not only couldn't get out of this chaotic entanglement, but the situation also developed beyond his expectations. 被列为“陪凶”的吴宓，此时正居于城内，得到心腹报告后，顿感大事不妙，“遂决久住京中，以避内潮焉”。（《吴宓日记》，第三册。）Wu Mi, who was listed as a "collaborator", was living in the city at the time. 2月21日，清华学生贺麟、张荫麟、陈铨向吴宓报告，言昨晚学生评议会又议决驱逐曹校长。3月6日，清华校务委员会在研究《清华学校组织大纲》时，国学研究院原办学宗旨中有几条被改变或裁撤。On February 21, Tsinghua students He Lin, Zhang Yinglin, and Chen Qu reported to Wu Mi, saying that last night the student council decided to expel Principal Cao again. 吴进退不得，乃以“研究院之性质及发展方向，已与宓所持之国学研究院之说完全反背”为由，向校长提出辞职请求，并另抄一份，送交研究院学生会。Wu was in a dilemma and, citing that "the nature and development direction of the research institute have completely reversed from the national studies research institute I advocated," he submitted a request to resign to the principal and also sent a copy to the student union of the research institute.
曹云祥正为张彭春辞职出走之事被部分师生搞得心烦意乱，见吴自动送上门来，正好借此机会给吴一刀，以平息张派的愤怒。Principal Cao Yunxiang, who was already upset by Zhang Pengchun's resignation and departure, saw Wu coming to him and took this opportunity to make a decisive move against Wu, in order to appease the anger of Zhang's faction.
于是，曹云祥不但立即批准了吴的请求，还把吴调离研究院，安排到大学部外文系任教授，研究院事务由曹本人“兼理”。Thus, Cao Yunxiang not only immediately approved Wu's request but also transferred him away from the research institute, arranging for him to serve as a professor in the foreign languages department of the university, while the affairs of the research institute were to be "co-managed" by Cao himself.
