Online Presentations and Face-to-Face Presentations
Most of the behavioural aspects processed during face-to-face encounters are lost online. One thing we notice with online presentations is that body language has less impact. Therefore, we should be prepared to over-deliver on the aspects that we can control in order to come across positively and to be as convincing and persuasive as possible.
This means focussing on how we use our voice.
Making the most of online delivery
Delivering effectively online
Below are some of the things we can do to make online presentations as effective as possible.
· Project volume to convey energy & confidence.
· Pay attention to speed, so you don’t lose the audience.
· Pay attention to your pronunciation, so you’re clear and punchy.
· Avoid using lots of fillers & verbal clutter, so you don’t irritate or distract your listeners.
· Add strong/longer pauses to elevate clarity & gravitas (seriousness).
· Vary the strength of your voice e.g. strong, deep and emphatic or calm, warm and gentle to engage/maintain attention
· Smile and look directly at the camera when you can to build rapport with your audience
Practical advice
One benefit of online presentations is that you are physically located in a space you already know, using a machine you are familiar with. However, even with this familiarity, there are some things you can check to make sure your presentation goes as smoothly as possible.
1. Keep your slides simple and don't overload them with text.
2. Check your technology in advance,e.g. do you know how to share your slides?
3. Pay attention to lighting - are you visible or a shadow?
4. Make sure your audience can hear you and only you.
5. Plan moments when you can look directly at your audience.
6. Include ways to check regularly that you have your audience's
attention
1. Simplify your slides
Slides should be easy to read, not too distracting or too wordy, professional and academic looking.
Focus on key words instead of trying to replicate everything you'll say. Otherwise, people are more likely to read than to listen.
2. Prepare your technology
- Get familiar and comfortable with the platform you're using in advance
- Close any unnecessary applications to minimise interference with your connection
- If you're using a laptop, ensure it's either plugged in or has a full battery.
3. Pay attention to lighting
- Make sure that your audience can see you clearly by checking the lighting in your room. If it isn’t optimal, use a desk lamp near your computer centred right over the camera in order to light up your face
- Minimise the lighting from other parts of the room and avoid having bright windows behind you.
4. Make sure your audience can hear you and only you
- Minimise any background noise, e.g. switch off washing machine or TV
- Use a good headset with a built-in microphone that cancels or neutralizes outside sounds
- Turn off your phone and any noisy computer notifications
- If you live with other people, make sure they know not to disturb you.
5. Look directly at your audience
- Avoid looking down or reading from your notes on your desk
- Practise speaking to the camera, not the screen
- Make sure you are centered in the frame, and your face is visible
- Don’t sit too close to your computer/laptop screen. Try sitting at an arm’s length from the screen
- Sit up straight, smile. Make an effort to look good. It will show. If it helps, put a sticker with a face on right next to your camera and speak to the face
It can be hard for audiences to focus their attention on you for all your presentation, whether it is face-to-face or online. There are several things you can do to prevent your audience from tuning you out, however. These things can help prevent your presentation becoming monotonous, but it's important to make sure they are relevant and don't feel like gimmicks (tricks or device intended to attract attention).
· show a brief video clip
· use engaging images
· solicit feedback or comments
· ask a direct or rhetorical question
· invite questions from the audience
· tell a brief anecdote that illustrates your point
· spread out your points over more slides, rather than less, in order to regularly refresh what is visible on screen
· focus on your voice and the way you speak
