About the position
The School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham is inviting applications for fully-funded PhD studentships focused on the theory of (co)-evolutionary algorithms. These algorithms are widely used in optimisation and game-theoretic contexts, but their theoretical understanding has been limited. The aim of the project is to develop mathematically rigorous proofs to analyse the runtime (optimisation time) of these algorithms using techniques from probability theory, randomised algorithms, and computational complexity.
The research will contribute to the theoretical foundation of (co)-evolutionary algorithms, enhancing their efficiency and reliability.
The project is part of the UKRI-funded Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship titled "Rigorous Time-Complexity Analysis of co-Evolutionary Algorithms".
This research regularly appears in major conferences like GECCO, PPSN, IJCAI, AAAI, and NeurIPS.
Requirement
A strong academic background in computer science, mathematics, or a related field.
A solid foundation in probability theory, discrete mathematics, game theory, and/or theoretical computer science is desirable.
