On his Truth Social site Monday evening, Trump unveiled plans to place a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada on Jan 20, his inauguration day. The US president-elect also said he intends to levy an additional 10% fee on all imports from China.

"On Jan 20, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. "This tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!"

Trump said on social media that he "had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States — But to no avail... and drugs are pouring into our country." The US will be charging China an additional 10 percent tariff on all Chinese imports, he added.

China is one of the world's toughest countries on counternarcotics both in terms of policy and its implementation. Fentanyl is an issue for the US. In the spirit of humanity, China has given support to the US's response to this issue. As early as in 2019, China officially scheduled all fentanyl-related substances and is the first country in the world ever to do so. China has carried out extensive and in-depth counternarcotics cooperation with the US, which has been highly productive. This is a clear fact for all to see.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum responded Tuesday, warning the president-elect that "neither threats nor tariffs will solve the issue of migration or drug consumption."
"Imposing one tariff would mean another comes in response, continuing like this until we put shared companies at risk," she said, reading from a letter addressed to Trump.
