Donald Trump Wins US Presidency

Republican Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States. With Republicans also taking back control of the US Senate, it is an incredible comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago.

The win seems to validate Trump's rough approach to politics. He attacked his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, in deeply personal — and often misogynistic and racist — terms, as he described America as a country under attack by violent migrants.

Harris is the child of a Black Jamaican father and an Indian mother.

Trump's tough language appealed to angry voters, and particularly men. He has promised to make big changes to government, increase presidential power and punish those he sees as his enemies, while reducing government efforts on civil rights.

On X, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote: "Congratulations on history's greatest comeback!"

Also on X, Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro wrote that Trump's win will give strength to right-wing and conservative groups around the world, and hoped it would inspire Brazil to "follow the same path." Bolsonaro lost his own reelection attempt in late 2022.

The US stock market and bitcoin rose on news of Trump's return to office, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumping 1,200 points, or 2.8%, early on November 6. Bitcoin hit all-time highs above $75,000, while Elon Musk's Tesla rose 12% before markets opened.

Banking stocks also moved higher, as a Trump presidency is expected to bring a decrease in regulation.

In Europe, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said he is looking forward to working with Trump "to advance peace through strength." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said he appreciates "President Trump's commitment to the 'peace through strength' approach in global affairs."

Trump has been critical of both NATO and US support for Ukraine.

Democrats did have some wins, including several firsts. New Jersey Representative Andy Kim became the first Korean American elected to the Senate, and Delaware State Representative Sarah McBride became the first openly transgender person elected to Congress.
