Artist Guo Yingguang's works are featured in MEP's recent major collection exhibition Annie Ernaux & Photography. This is Guo Yingguang's latest exhibition with MEP since her solo exhibition there in 2019.“Exteriors — Annie Ernaux and Photography” celebrates the dynamic relationship between photography and the writing of Annie Ernaux. Winner of the Nobel Prize of Literature, Annie Ernaux is known for her social and feminist commitment, particularly to the younger generation, and for her ability to explore universal themes such as memory, identity and the human condition. Her precise style and emotional analysis have made her a major figure in contemporary literature. It combines texts from Ernaux’s book Exteriors (Journal du dehors), 1993 – a record of happenings on trains, shops and streets in-and-around Cergy-Pontoise between 1985 and 1992 – with more than one hundred and fifty images from the MEP collection by major photographers such as Harry Callahan, Claude Dityvon, Dolorès Marat, Daido Moriyama, Janine Niepce, Issei Suda, Henry Wessel and Bernard Pierre Wolff, amongst others. The image selection covers the second half of 20th century and includes photographs mostly taken in France but also in England, Japan, USA and other countries. To coincide with the exhibition, a catalogue will be published in French and in English by Éditions MACK in partnership with the MEP.

Guo Yingguang’s artistic practice revolves around public issues, opening up personal experiences to the public, then incorporating external feedbacks and impacts into individual reflection and extension on works, suffused a tug between publicity and privacy. She is adept at multi-media practice, combing installation, videography, sculpture, painting, photography, happening as well as external composition to convey abundant yet delicate emotions. She often adopts intricate and concise visual language, controversial themes, to lead reflection and spark discussion in both the art world as well as in society. Guo Yingguang, born in 1983 in Liaoning, China, holds a Master’s degree in Photography from London College of Communication (UAL), a Bachelor’s degree in Photography Communication University of China. She currently lives and works in Beijing and Huaxin. Guo Yingguang has won Jimei ARLES 2017 Madame Figaro Women Photography Festival with the series “The Bliss of Conformity” at the start of her career and was invited to exhibit at Rencontres d’Arles International Photography Festival in France. She was recommended by international artists such as Sophie Calle and Paul Graham. In 2019, at the invitation of Simon Baker (former chief photography curator at Tate), Guo Yingguang’s first solo exhibition “Guo Yingguang: The Bliss of Happiness” opened at Maison Européenne de la Photographie, making her the first Chinese female artist to hold a solo exhibition at MEP.After years of reflexivity and creative overthrow to cope with public voices, Guo Yingguang’s second solo exhibition realized in 2022 with a more abstract, integrate and agile method to experiment her practice, continuing her path of two-way critical acceptance on external public/social structure and chimeric art, illustrating individual identity and personal experiences in new perspectives.
Yves Scherer was born in Switzerland in 1987 and now lives in New York. Graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in London, majoring in sculpture, his works have been widely exhibited in art institutions around the world. Scherer has won the 2015 Swiss Art Award, as well as the German Cultural Agency Board of Directors and the IAAB Beijing Travel Foundation Art Award.Scherer's works always explore the edges between the real and the virtual worlds. For him, life itself is a fantasy game: the way people behave in public, the images and persona they inted to have, and the reciprocal influences between celebrities and the general public... He tries to express those romantic and interactive relationships in a more immersive way. His creations often come from social news and real events. Gender identities, life experiences, Hollywood culture, and public media are all topics that he is passionate about, as they are gradually blurring the boundaries between the virtual and the real words. Therefore, in his works, he often locates and reproduces the illusions in life through visual traps: splicing and fusing materials and textures, combining two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces, mixing nature and numbers, to present his understandings and questionings on life and virtual culture.Yves Scherer manages to avoid the trivialization that involves a broad implications on popular genre, instead, he puts it at the center of reflection and investigation, explores the tension of social relationship between the virtual and the real worlds. Scherer employs a diverse media for creation including painting, photography, sculpture and installation. He started creating mostly two-dimensional works such as traditional photography and digital imaging collage, while gradually shifting to use more simple and unprocessed materials. His use of wood, grass, cloth, artificial fur and other experimental materials make him a star of the contemporary arte povera. The way of expressing virtual culture with traditional sculpture is also an important symbol of Scherer's.
