A Wind Turbine is a device which uses kinetic energy of blowing wind to generate electrical energy. A wind turbine consists of two or three rotor blades which are mounted on a rotor. When the blowing wind exerts a lift and drag force on these blades, the rotor starts rotating. A main shaft is attached to the rotor which is connected to an electric generator on the other end. The generator produces electricity when driven by the wind turbine.

What is a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT)?

The type of wind turbine in which the axis of its rotation is parallel to the flow of air stream is known as a horizontal axis wind turbine or HAWT. The horizontal axis wind turbine is the most successful type of wind turbine and it is most widely used worldwide. The horizontal axis turbine is mainly used for the generation of electricity for commercial purposes in different parts of the world.

旋转轴与气流平行的风力涡轮机类型被称为水平轴风力涡轮机或HAWT。水平轴风力发电机是最成功的风力发电机类型,在全球范围内应用最广泛。水平轴水轮机主要用于世界各地商业用途的发电。

The horizontal axis wind turbines have comparatively low cuts in wind speed and have a high power coefficient. However, the design of HAWT is relatively more complicated and costly because it requires a gearbox and an electric generator placed at the top of the tower. The major components that a horizontal axis wind turbine consists of are turbine blades, hub, gearbox, generator, tower, nacelle, and yaw control (to orient the turbine in the direction of wind).

Advantages:

  3. Larger Blades: HAWTs can have much larger blades than other types of wind turbines, which means they can generate more electricity.

优点:

Disadvantages:

  3. Bird and Bat Mortality: HAWTs can pose a risk to birds and bats, which can collide with the spinning blades.

缺点:
