A friend recently got duped by a scam text purporting to be from his middle daughter, and transferred ?100 to an account to cover some baffling yet, according to the text, extremely time-sensitive untoward event. You can imagine how the scammer pulled that off.
最近，一位朋友被一条声称是他二女儿发来的诈骗短信骗了，他把100英镑转到了一个账户上，以掩盖一些令人费解但却极其敏感的事件。可以想象一下骗子是怎么做到的。
Think of everyday, low-level parental anxiety, expecting bad news when kids are anywhere farther away than the kitchen table; add the sheer believability of any bad news that starts with a 19-year-old texting: "I smashed my phone"; all a scammer has to do is lean in.
想想每天，当孩子们在餐桌以外的任何地方时，父母都在焦虑，他们都害怕有坏消息，况且，有时坏消息比好消息更具有可信度。坏消息的开头一般是一个19岁的孩子发短信称：“我手机坏了”，这时，骗子只要凑过来就可以了。
Still, the story wasn't watertight and we all called him stupid for ages afterwards, for failing to ask basic questions such as:" But if it's your phone that's broken, why does the money need to go into someone else's bank account?"

He didn't even call the number to check that he could speak to her – arguably, ?100 lighter was a good place to land. If ever anyone tries to relieve him of his life savings, he'll be concentrating.

But imagine if you could hear your kid, sounding exactly like themselves, asking for money? Whose defences would be strong enough to survive voice cloning?

The guys from Stop Scams UK tried to explain this to me last year: a scammer could pull a kid's voice off their TikTok account; all they would have to do then is find the parent's phone number.
英国停止诈骗组织的人去年曾解释过这个问题：骗子可以从他们的 TikTok 账户上盗取孩子的声音；他们所要做的就是找到父母的电话号码。
I got the wrong end of the stick and thought they had to patchwork a message out of the recorded words available on social media. Good luck with getting a believable catastrophe out of football tips and K-pop, I thought.

I hadn't considered AI for even 10 seconds, and whether it could extrapolate speech patterns from a sample, which it can. I still think you can get round it pretty easily.

Kid-machine asks for urgent assistance. You say: "Precious and perfect being, I love you with all my heart." Kid-machine will surely reply: "I love you too." How could it not? Real kid would claim to have been sick in its mouth. There's no building an algorithm for this.
孩子们打电话来请求紧急援助。你说：“珍贵而完美的宝贝，我永远爱你。”机器肯定会回答：“我也爱你。”怎么可能不爱呢？但真正的孩子会说“真恶心”。目前没有算法可以解决这个问题。
